The method comprises several steps including dosing the body of water with a predetermined concentration of a treating agent having a fluorescent tag covalently bonded to the treating agent, removing a sample of the water containing the tagged treating agent, analyzing the emissivity of the sample to measure the concentration of the treating agent in the sample and adjusting the concentration of the treating agent accordingly to fit within a predetermined concentration range.

    Abstract: A method for concentrating coal tailings which comprises steps of: feeding the coal tailings to a thickener; treating the coal tailings with a hydrophobic polyelectrolyte copolymer coagulant which comprises diallyldimethylammonium chloride and a more hydrophobic monomer, the coagulant is added to the coal tailings in an amount between about 0.05 to about 0.25 lb/ton; treating the coal tailings with a flocculant in an amount between about 0.05 to about 0.25 lb/ton; discharging substantially concentrated tailing; and withdrawing substantially clarified liquid from the thickener.
