    Abstract: The invention relates to an endless conveyor following a convex contour for use in cooperation with a discharge/feed conveyor. The endless conveyor comprises a number of article holders, such as grippers, for receiving therein discrete articles, such as fruit or eggs. The endless conveyor includes a first conveyor part, which moves continuously in operation, and a second conveyor part, which moves intermittently in operation. The first conveyor part, at a first conveyor part end thereof, is bounded by a return wheel having a stationary rotary shaft. The return wheel is also rotatably drivable for driving the endless conveyor. The first conveyor is positioned to move substantially tangential to the direction of movement of the discharge conveyor, which is also continuously movable, such that the difference in speed between the discharge/feed conveyor and the first conveyor part is substantially zero.

    Abstract: An apparatus for candling eggs travelling along a path for the presence of blood, comprising a lightproof drum which is drivable for rotation around a fixed shaft and wherein detection means are accommodated, the drum having a number of light transmission openings which each have a bellows, the drum in operation having a rotational speed so that the ends of the bellows remote from the drum have a speed corresponding to the speed of travel of the eggs, the drum with the bellows being positioned relative to the path of travel so that in operation, each time during a part of the path of travel of the eggs, the bellows connect to an egg to be inspected, while the detection means are positioned in the drum so that they only receive light that falls into the drum via the egg which is to be inspected and to which the bellows connects, and via the light transmission opening associated with that bellows.

    Abstract: A light beam such a laser beam is used to scan the surface of an egg for flaws such as pin holes, cracks, thinned shell regions, etc. The light beam is vibrated with a rocking/rotating movement to describe a closed curve such as a circle, ellipse or an ellipse so narrow that it is effectively a straight line. The utilization of such a light beam allows identification of types of flaws due to the character of the progression of light emanating from the egg. The invention includes apparatus for rotating the egg about its longitudinal axis in the path of the beam or beams. The apparatus also includes apparatus for forming the vibrating beam such as mirrors vibrated by out of phase electro-magnetic vibration or piezo electric actuators.

    Abstract: An apparatus for unloading a container having different shelves, each filled with a plurality of stacks of trays filled with a product, such as eggs. The container is comprised of four vertical support sections and horizontal connecting sections which support the stack carrying shelves. During the unloading of the various shelves, each of which carries at least three adjacent stacks of trays, the middle stack is, preferably, first removed, and more preferably after loosening such middle stack by lifting and moving it sideways a small distance to prevent jamming of the middle stack and an adjacent stack. In one embodiment, a fork-shaped unloading device can be inserted under tunnel-shaped openings of the lowermost of a stack of trays, and the points of which are provided with switch elements or sensors.

To prevent, or at least substantially mitigate the production of vapor in the place where the apparatus is disposed, means are provided for exhausting vapor at the positions where the conveyors enters and leaves the housing.     Abstract: A method and apparatus of unloading a container having shelves at different levels, each shelf being filled with at least three adjacent stacks of trays filled with a product, such as eggs. The container is comprised of four vertical angle sections connected by horizontal sections which support the stack carrying shelves. The middle stack of trays is always removed first, after loosening that stack by moving it slightly sideways to prevent jamming with the outer adjacent stacks of trays. In one embodiment, a fork-shaped unloading device is used for the unloading, which device can be inserted under tunnel-shaped openings of the lowermost tray of a stack of trays, and the points of which are provided with switch elements or sensors to sense the edge of the shelf. A beam, with electromagnets, is used to lift a superadjacent shelf so that stacks of trays can be unloaded from a subadjacent shelf.

    Abstract: An apparatus for sorting and removing undesirable objects from a feed belt conveyor which passes an inspection station, while downstream of the inspection station there is arranged a "trapdoor" and subsequently a discharge conveyor. The undesirable objects can be discharged through the trapdoor, which undesirable objects can be defined as such upstream of the trapdoor by human or automatic detection. The location of the objects in question can for instance be defined by a "tracking" memory (shift register) and remains known at least as far as the trapdoor. In an apparatus more particularly adapted for processing vulnerable objects, such as eggs, the feed belt conveyor and the discharge belt conveyor are substantially aligned, there being arranged at least adjacent the trapdoor disposed between the belts, a turnstile, a chain having carriers (FIG. 2) or the like.

    Abstract: Apparatus for horizontally and vertically transporting articles, such as eggs, without dropping thereof, in which an intermittently, substantially horizontally movable conveyor is provided with a plurality of holders, each designed to hold a single article. Each holder comprises at least two rotary portions, movable between a closed position in which it supports an article and an open position in which it releases an article. The conveyor transports the articles, while the holders are in closed positions, into a transfer station which is provided with a plurality grippers, such as suction cups, one for each associated holder in the transfer station. Each gripper grips an article in an associated holder, while the holder is in a closed position, and after the holder is opened, the gripper transports the article vertically downwardly, through the opened rotary portions of the holder, to minimize dropping thereof, after which the article is released.

    Abstract: Weighing apparatus for grading articles such as eggs and the like according to their weight. The apparatus comprises a tray, and a pair of leaf springs for mounting the tray for up and down movement and operatively connected to the tray and a support member, and being deflectable generally downwardly relative to the support member a first distance responsive to article weight. A stop is provided for allowing downward deflection of the tray relative to the support only to a second distance, which is normally less than the first distance. An out-of-round cam or the like changes the relative position of the stop and the support member so that the second distance approaches the first distance, and electrical contacts, photoelectric apparatus, or the like, are provided to sense when the second distance is substantially equal to the first distance.
