  • Patent number: 8040636
Abstract: A hard disk drive includes a magnetic retractor situated at and integrated with the pivot holder of a head stack assembly. An actuator arm of the head stack assembly supports a read/write head, a bobbin supports a voice coil of a voice coil motor, and the actuator arm and bobbin extend in generally opposite directions from pivot holder. The pivot holder receives a pivot such that the actuator arm can be rotated about an axis of the pivot. The voice coil motor also includes a pair of magnets (permanent magnet). The retractor interacts with the magnets of the voice coil motor to generate a retract force which urges the actuator arm to a position at which the read/write head is parked. By providing the retractor on the pivot holder, the retract force will always be close to that specified according to the design of the drive.

  • Patent number: 7532439
Abstract: An actuator latch apparatus for a hard disk drive (HDD). The actuator latch apparatus includes a first latch formed on one end portion of a swing arm, a notch formed on the one end portion of the swing arm and spaced a predetermined interval from the first latch in a pivoting direction of the swing arm, and a latch lever pivotably installed on a base member. The latch lever includes a second latch contacting the first latch when the swing arm pivots in a first direction, and a hook engaging with the notch when the swing arm pivots in a second direction opposite to the first direction. Facing surfaces of the first latch and the second latch are inclined such that the first latch and the second latch slide into contact with each other when the swing arm pivots in the first direction.

  • Publication number: 20070121252
Abstract: An actuator of a hard disk drive includes a swing arm having an axis or rotation, a suspension extending from a distal end of the swing arm, a read/write head mounted on the suspension, a coil support fixed to a proximate end of the swing arm so as to rotate with the swing arm and to which a voice coil motor coil is wound, a respective magnet disposed above and/or below the voice coil motor coil as facing the voice coil motor coil, and at least one magnetic retracting member of a magnetic material fixed to the coil support and attracted to the magnet. Each magnetic retracting member arrives close to the magnet when the swing arm is rotated clockwise or counterclockwise about its axis of rotation. Thus, the force of attraction between the magnetic retracting member and the magnet biases the wing arm in one of its directions of rotation such as that in which the swing arm is moved during an unloading operation in which the read/write head is parked.

  • Publication number: 20070081275
Abstract: An actuator and a hard disk drive (HDD) having the same. The actuator of the HDD includes a swing arm to rotate about a pivot and having a suspension with a read/write head mounted on a front end of the swing arm to record and reproduce data , a coil-supporting portion connected to a rear end of the swing arm rotate together with the swing arm to receive voice coil motor (VCM) coil , a magnet positioned above and under the VCM coil to face each other to face the VCM coil, and at least one swing-arm protrusion formed at the rear end of the swing arm to protrude toward the magnet and including a magnetic material so that a bias torque is produced due to an interaction between the at least one swing-arm protrusion and the magnet.

  • Publication number: 20060092573
Abstract: A latch system for a hard disk drive and a method of forming the latch system are disclosed. The latch system includes an actuator on which a read/write head is installed, and a latch locking the actuator. The actuator and the latch each has a mass center and a pivot center, and a direction of the mass center of the latch on the basis of the pivot center of the latch is the same as a direction of the mass center of the actuator on the basis of the pivot center of the actuator.
