Patent number: 9119623Abstract: An electrosurgical generator apparatus controls a variable output signal to electrodes. The generator apparatus operates in a cut mode, a coagulation mode or a stimulate mode. The generator apparatus comprises a DC power supply that provides regulated low voltage and high voltage outputs and a radio frequency (RF) waveform generator circuit that provides pulse duration modulation (PDM) of a carrier signal. The carrier signal directly affects the variable output signal to the electrodes. A control circuit controls a variable output signal to electrodes used in electrosurgical procedures. The control circuit comprises a DC power supply circuit that provides regulated low voltage and high voltage outputs and an RF waveform generator circuit that provides pulse duration modulation of a carrier signal. The carrier signal directly affects the variable output signal to the electrodes.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 2010Date of Patent: September 1, 2015Assignee: Synergetics USA, Inc.Inventors: Jerry L. Publication number: 20090240244Abstract: A method of controlling output power of an electrosurgical generator apparatus that controls a variable output signal to a pair of electrodes includes setting the output power of the generator apparatus to a selected power output level. An impedance is measured across the electrodes when the electrodes are applied to an area of tissue. The output power of the generator apparatus is changed to a boost power output level greater than the selected power output level. The boost power output level corresponds to a calculation based at least in part on the measured impedance. The method further includes applying the output signal to the electrodes at the boost power output level for a first time duration and changing the power output to the selected power output level after the first time duration. An electrosurgical generator apparatus operating in accordance with the method is also described.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 2, 2009Publication date: September 24, 2009Applicant: Synergetics USA, Inc.Inventors: Jerry L. Malis, Anthony John Groch

Publication number: 20080004619Abstract: An electrosurgical bipolar instrument includes an instrument housing having a distal end, a proximal end and an elongated body therebetween. The electrosurgical bipolar instrument includes a pair of radio frequency (RF) electrodes disposed at the distal end of the instrument housing and a control circuit mounted within the instrument housing. The control circuit has a first cut/coagulate mode pad, a common pad and a first cut/coagulate mode push button configured to electrically couple the first cut/coagulate mode pad to the common pad when actuated. The electrosurgical bipolar instrument further includes a plug coupled to the proximal end of the instrument housing having first and second RF contacts electrically coupled to the pair of RF electrodes. The plug has a first cut/coagulate mode contact and a first common contact electrically isolated from the first and second RF contacts and the pair of RF electrodes.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 28, 2007Publication date: January 3, 2008Applicant: SYNERGETICS USA, INC.Inventors: Jerry L. Patent number: 5855061Abstract: A method is provided for making an electrode tip for use in a bipolar electrosurgical instrument from a single flat blank of metal. The method uses a photo chemical machining process. The resultant electrode tip has a generally loop shaped working portion. Use of the flat blank of metal results in electrodes having working portions with sharp edges in cross-section. The working portions emit concentrated energy in the radial direction.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 1997Date of Patent: January 5, 1999Assignee: Valley Forge Scientific CorporationInventors: Jerry L. Malis, Martin T. Mortimer, Leonard Malis

Patent number: 5318563Abstract: An electrosurgical bipolar RF generator apparatus includes a bipolar electrode. An aperiodic sequence of uniform width bursts of a high frequency signal are electronically synthesized. Substantially identical decaying amplitude envelopes are impressed on the bursts of the high frequency signal. Each of the envelopes has a predetermined rate of change from a preselected initial amplitude. The impressed bursts of the high frequency signal are applied to the electrode. The electrical apparatus operates in a cut mode or a coagulation mode. The apparatus includes a power supply for providing a variable DC voltage, a short circuit detect circuit for detecting a short circuit at the bipolar electrode, and an open circuit detector for detecting an open circuit at the bipolar electrode.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1992Date of Patent: June 7, 1994Assignee: Valley Forge Scientific CorporationInventors: Jerry L.
