Patent number: 6953261Abstract: A tubular reflector for reflecting light emanating from a tubular light source. The tubular reflector may be semi-circular or elliptical in shape and positioned around the tubular light source. Furthermore, the inner reflective surface of the tubular reflector may be smooth or multi-faceted. The reflector may reflect light from the tubular light source and redirect the light to achieve a desired distribution pattern.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 2000Date of Patent: October 11, 2005Assignee: North American Lighting, Inc.Inventors: Jianzhong Jiao, Matthew A. Patent number: 6623132Abstract: A display device and a lighting system is provided for providing lighting in exterior and interior lighting applications, such as for center high mount stop lights (CHMSL) and other automotive lighting applications. The display device uses a light guide having light couplers hingedly attached to a light source end for receiving light from at least one light source. The light guide extends from the light source end with a light emitting surface and a light guide surface opposite the light emitting surface. The light emitting surface and the light guide surface extend in a direction substantially parallel to the direction of the light received from the light source. The light guide surface has a plurality of surface sections extending at angles relative to one another. The surface sections may be angled at alternating sections to direct light towards the light emitting surface using total internal reflection.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2001Date of Patent: September 23, 2003Assignee: North American Lighting, Inc.Inventors: Matthew A. Lekson, Jianzhong Jiao

Patent number: 6007224Abstract: A reflector for a headlamp is divided into zones depending on the sizes of the light source images produced by the various parts of the reflector. Those parts of the reflector that provide smaller image sizes are used to supply light to the higher intensity parts of the road pattern. This allows greater control over glare and is particularly useful for headlamps having high intensity discharge as a light source. In one embodiment, a larger reflector is trimmed to be smaller and yet to retain portions that provide the small light source images.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1997Date of Patent: December 28, 1999Assignee: North American Lighting, Inc.Inventors: Jianzhong Jiao, Douglas F. Kreysar, Ben Wang

Patent number: 5197792Abstract: A device for providing large area uniform illumination of display panels comprises a light transmitting member including a light receiver for receiving light from a light source and reflecting that light within the light transmitting member in at least a first direction parallel to a first axis and parallel to the plane of the light transmitting member. A plurality of first reflectors reflect a first portion of the light from the first direction to an exit direction orthogonal to the plane of the light transmitting member and reflect a second portion of the light from the first direction to a second direction parallel to the plane of the light transmitting member and parallel to a second axis that is perpendicular to the first axis. A plurality of second light reflectors reflect the light from the second direction to the exit direction.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1992Date of Patent: March 30, 1993Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Jianzhong Jiao, Jeffrey J.
