Patent number: 5479986Abstract: A method and apparatus for establishing a fluid plug within a well bore which can then be substantially destroyed upon demand to permit reestablishment of the well within a short period of time thereafter. Increased pressure actuates a plug rupture mechanism which destroys the integrity of the plug and allows the plug to be substantially eliminated from the wellbore within a short period of time thereafter. In described preferred embodiments, the plug is comprised of a salt and sand mixture which is highly resistant to fluid compressive forces but is subject to destruction under shear tension forces. The plug may be encased within a plug sleeve which is, in turn, encased within a plug housing which may be disposed within the well bore. The sleeve is associated within the housing so that fluid may be displaced about the plug sleeve as the housing is disposed into the well bore.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1994Date of Patent: January 2, 1996Assignee: Halliburton CompanyInventors: John C. Patent number: 5211226Abstract: A straight bore metal-to-metal seal for connecting a tubing string to the mandrel of a well packer has a radially deflectable sealing member compressed between the internal bore surface of a tubular seal receptacle and the tubular body portion of a seal mandrel. The seal receptacle has a radially stepped sealing surface which is engaged by the deflectable sealing member in the operative sealing position. The inside bore of the deflectable sealing member is positively sealed against the outside surface of the seal mandrel by a pair of metal V-rings. A positive seal is also produced by engagement of the deflectable sealing member against the radially stepped bore of the seal receptacle. The deflectable sealing member is loaded by radial compression forces produced as a result of interference engagement of the deflectable sealing member against the radially stepped bore.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1992Date of Patent: May 18, 1993Assignee: Otis Engineering CorporationInventors: James D. Patent number: 5183115Abstract: Disclosed is a new and novel poppet type safety valve useful in flow conduits in fluid storage well systems. The safety valve is programmable to automatically close at various predetermined ratios of production mass flow rate-ambient pressure to prevent undesirable high flow rates or uncontrolled out-flow of fluid stored in a reservoir if the flow conduit or wellhead is damaged. This safety valve is lowered into and locked and sealed in a landing nipple in the well conduit. The safety valve has a variable bias which biases the valve member toward open position and a variable flow restrictor which is automatically actuated by a sensing actuator continually sensing reservoir pressure to vary the restricted annular flow area between the valve housing and inside of the well conduit for closure at the desired flow rate. The valve element has a through flow passage with locking recesses in the flow passage into which the sensing actuator may be releasably locked.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1991Date of Patent: February 2, 1993Assignee: Otis Engineering CorporationInventor: John C. Patent number: 5141023Abstract: A retrievable subsurface safety valve positioned in a well conduit is actuated to close by a predetermined flow rate through the safety valve. A valve member having a sealing surface is moveable by flow to sealingly engage an annular seat in the valve, closing the valve to flow. All forms of the invention safety valve have retrievable variable weight assemblies which releasably lock in the valve member for varying the flow rate at which each valve closes. In two invention forms, the weight assemblies when retrieved from the valve members leave the valve members open for passage of well tools through the valve members. In one invention form, the valve housing has a variable bias for biasing the valve member toward open position and this safety valve may be operated to expend the seat, housing and valve member with or without the variable weight assembly.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 1991Date of Patent: August 25, 1992Assignee: Otis Engineering CorporationInventors: William W. Dollison, John C. Gano

Patent number: 4796698Abstract: A drilling template for multiple wells has a dummy post on the template associated with each wellhead position and a wellhead connector is transferable between the dummy post and wellhead during completion and workover operations. A subsea wellhead is provided with a guide frame on which a dummy post is supported permitting the wellhead connector to be transferred between the dummy post and the wellhead. The wellhead includes a landing nipple and tubing hanger which permit the tubing hanger to tilt relative to the casing head without breaking the seal between the hanger and nipple. The wellhead connector is latched and released from the tubing hanger by reciprocation of a control sleeve and the connector is held in the unlatched position by a releasable lock. The wellhead connector includes a plug having a metal seal held in compression together with a resilient seal.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1987Date of Patent: January 10, 1989Assignee: Otis Engineering CorporationInventor: John C. Patent number: 4730677Abstract: A system and method for servicing subsea wells with a flexible riser. The flexible riser can be modified for use either with wireline or through the flow line tools. The flexible riser eliminates the requirement for motion or heave compensating equipment associated with rigid marine riser systems. The flexible riser, lower riser package and associated surface support equipment can be used to obtain vertical access to a subsea well without the need to use a drill ship or semisubmersible.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1986Date of Patent: March 15, 1988Assignee: Otis Engineering CorporationInventors: Joseph L. Pearce, Phillip S. Sizer, John C. Gano, John H. Yonker, Robert L. Thurman, James F. O'Sullivan, Jr., Dayton M. Simpson, Richard A. Roberts, Anthony J. Healey, Urie G. Nooteboom

Patent number: 4702320Abstract: A system and method for attaching and removing equipment from a subsea wellhead in which equipment is lowered and raised on a flexible riser pipe, cables extend from the equipment to the wellhead and are winched in and out to control movement of the equipment adjacent the wellhead. While the cables are being winched in or out, the cables are maintained in tension by the cable reel or a motion compensator, between the equipment and riser pipe, permits the riser pipe to reciprocate vertically with the vessel in response to wave action, while the equipment is insulated from this action during engagement and disengagement with the wellhead. The equipment may include a guide frame, which may be made in two pieces, so that the upper section of the guide frame together with a riser pipe connector, may be released from the remainder of the frame and connector and lifted off by the riser pipe or by buoyancy means.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 1986Date of Patent: October 27, 1987Assignee: Otis Engineering CorporationInventors: John C. Patent number: 4582134Abstract: A hydraulically set retrievable well packer, with dual mandrels connectable into well tubing, for sealing the tubing to and anchoring the packer body in well casing utilizing a unique C-ring slip anchoring system. The mandrels are slidably connected for limited longitudinal movement in the packer body, which eliminates tubing spacing-out and temperature length change problems. There is a separate mandrel through the packer body for conducting flow from the casing annulus below the set packer. An internal lock system is provided to retain the packer in set position. If tubing parts above the set packer, the mandrels are supported and metal-to-metal sealed in the packer preventing tubing below the packer from falling. The packer may be retrieved by cutting one or both mandrels above the packing elements and picking up to release an internal connector which allows the slips and packing element to retract and the packer to be retrieved from the well.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 1984Date of Patent: April 15, 1986Assignee: Otis Engineering CorporationInventors: John C. Gano, Donald H. Perkins

Patent number: 4535968Abstract: A ball type valve in which the ball is rotated by the cooperation of multiple tracks and multiple track followers. Also, a pressure operated permanent lock-out is disclosed. Pressure applied to a piston withdraws an expander from under a lock ring to release a lock-out sleeve. Continued application of pressure drives the sleeve to valve lock-open position where the sleeve is permanently locked to the housing.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1983Date of Patent: August 20, 1985Assignee: Otis Engineering CorporationInventors: John C.
