Publication number: 20130052903Abstract: An electrodeless plasma lamp and method of forming a seal on an electrodeless bulb for use in the plasma lamp are described. The method may include providing a section of tube, cutting the tube to length, and sealing a first point on one end of the tube in a rounded fashion to form a first end of the electrodeless bulb. The cross-sectional diameter of an opposite end of the tube is reduced to form a tail on the electrodeless bulb. The tail is open to an interior portion of the bulb where the interior portion forms a cavity. One or more fill gases are injected into the cavity of the bulb. A first portion along the tail of the bulb is sealed thereby forming a truncated tail. A second point on the tail, intermediate between a terminal portion of the tail and a portion of the bulb containing the cavity, is sealed. The second point is sealed with a plasma torch by using an inert-gas element with a minimum of hydrogen gas.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 25, 2011Publication date: February 28, 2013Applicant: Luxim CorporationInventors: Richard Gilliard, Abdeslam Hafidi, Thomas O'Halloran, John F. Patent number: 4895420Abstract: A high reflectance light guide may be inexpensively made by rolling a thin transparent plastic film to form a tube. The tube is formed with multiple layers of the plastic material, and air entrained between the layers of plastic. When the plastic material and the separating layers of air have thicknesses that are approximately equal, there is a high degree of reflectance at the plastic and air interface. Light can then be directed along the interior of the tube with little light loss. Light may then be efficiently distributed over an extended distance with little material cost.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 1988Date of Patent: January 23, 1990Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventor: John F. Patent number: 4841196Abstract: A two-filament incandescent lamp and operating circuit well suited to lighting applications requiring high service reliability. In the lamp, the rated operating voltage of the second filament is greater than that of the first filament. In the operating circuit, there is an inductive reactance in series with the lamp and, in one aspect of the invention, an electrical connection across the lamp terminals for measuring the operating voltage of the lamp. After the power and rated wattage of both lamp filaments have been selected, matched values of inductive reactance and open circuit voltage of the operating circuit can be uniquely determined such that the following advantages are obtained. When the first lamp filament fails, the second filament comes into full brilliance. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, there will be no significant change in the luminous output of the lamp before and after failure of the first filament.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1987Date of Patent: June 20, 1989Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventor: John F. Patent number: 4812714Abstract: A metal halide arc discharge lamp comprises an arc tube containing a chemical fill including mercury and metal halides and having first and second electrodes respectively sealed at opposite ends thereof. An outer envelope surrounds the arc tube and has first and second terminals for electrical connection thereto. An electrodeless source of ultraviolet radiation is provided within the outer envelope proximate the arc tube for producing radiation which illuminates the path between the electrodes of the arc tube to decrease the amount of time for generating a gaseous discharge therebetween. The ultraviolet light source includes an envelope of ultraviolet light transmitting material having opposing ends. Portions of the envelope of the ultraviolet light source are capacitively coupled across the electrodes of the arc tube such that the source produces ultraviolet radiation during lamp starting when the first and second terminals of the lamp are energized.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1987Date of Patent: March 14, 1989Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventors: William M. Patent number: 4174944Abstract: An electrically fired flash lamp which utilizes a single conductive lead member. The lead protrudes within the lamp's envelope and is covered by a quantity of primer material. A conductive coating (e.g. tin oxide) covers a major portion of the external surface of the envelope and is capacitively coupled through the envelope's wall to the combustible filamentary material (e.g. shredded zirconium) therein. In another embodiment, a second conductive coating is located on the internal surface of the envelope opposite the outer coating and in electrical contact with the filamentary material. Accordingly, both coatings are capacitively coupled when the lamp is electrically fired. A sequentially-activated array of the above lamps is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1978Date of Patent: November 20, 1979Assignee: GTE Sylvania IncorporatedInventors: P.
