  • Patent number: 4676922
Abstract: Preblends of sulfur and N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazolesulfenamide, optionally with diphenylguanadine, can be stabilized against deterioration by incorporating with these materials at least one additive selected from the group consisting phthalic anhydride, phthalic acid and tetrahydrophthalic anhydride. Vulcanizable rubber compounds containing aged preblends with these additives exhibit reduced scorch as compared to aged preblends without said additives.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 4, 1986
Date of Patent: June 30, 1987
    Assignee: GenCorp Inc.
    Inventor: John G. Sommer
  • Patent number: 4601935
Abstract: Cured rubbery carbon black reinforced EPDM roofing membranes are joined at their primed seams by a seaming tape comprising a carbon black reinforced compounded lightly cured blend of a butyl rubber and a polyisobutylene. The tape can exhibit a peel strength of at least about 2.5 pli at about 158.degree. F.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 6, 1985
Date of Patent: July 22, 1986
    Assignee: GenCorp Inc.
Inventors: Fredric D. Metcalf, John G. Sommer
  • Patent number: 4453992
Abstract: A pneumatic tire having a pocket filled with lubricant attached to the inner sidewall of the tire having a puncture sealant surrounded by an O-ring built into the inside wall of the pocket. The puncture sealant allows lubricant to be injected into the pocket by use of a syringe and eliminates the need for subsequent sealing of the pocket and leakage of lubricant from the pocket.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 8, 1981
Date of Patent: June 12, 1984
Assignee: The General Tire & Rubber Company
Inventors: Tiong H. Kuan, Joseph Pantuso, John G. Sommer
  • Patent number: 4436857
Abstract: A carboxylated polymer latex containing a minor amount by weight of a heat sensitizer sufficient to gel the polymer and which also can contain fillers, wetting agents and stabilizers can be used to provide a water resistant film on the surface of a with rubber compound or composition which subsequently can be cooled rapidly wiht water and dried. The resulting latex coated rubber can then be stacked or assembled without sticking.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 6, 1981
Date of Patent: March 13, 1984
Assignee: The General Tire & Rubber Company
Inventors: Tiong H. Kuan, John G. Sommer
  • Patent number: 4217395
Abstract: A carboxylated polymer latex containing a minor amount by weight of a heat sensitizer sufficient to gel the polymer and which also can contain fillers, wetting agents and stabilizers can be used to provide a water resistant film on the surface of a hot rubber compound or composition which subsequently can be cooled rapidly with water and dried. The resulting latex coated rubber can then be stacked or assembled without sticking.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 19, 1979
Date of Patent: August 12, 1980
Assignee: The General Tile & Rubber Company
Inventors: Tiong Ho Kuan, John G. Sommer
  • Patent number: 4195143
Abstract: Disclosed is a sulfur-cured rubber article that has high resistance to reversion and low compression set which is post-modified to improve its fatigue life. The method involves introducing additional elemental sulfur in solution into the low sulfur-cured rubber article subsequent to curing.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 27, 1978
Date of Patent: March 25, 1980
Assignee: The General Tire & Rubber Company
    Inventor: John G. Sommer, Jr.
  • Patent number: 4128523
Abstract: Blends of low molecular weight crystalline polyethylene and crystalline EPDM polymers exhibit good processing and on curing show unexpected high flexural modulus. The addition of reinforcing agents will raise the modulus and other physical properties but the processability can remain satisfactory.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 18, 1977
Date of Patent: December 5, 1978
Assignee: The General Tire & Rubber Co.
Inventors: James E. Britton, Fredric D. Metcalf, John G. Sommer, Tiong H. Kuan, Victor R. Rilling, John A. Welch
  • Patent number: 4045362
Abstract: To facilitate relative movement between the internal surface of a pneumatic tire which comes in contact when the tire is run in a deflated condition, the interior of the tire is coated with a lubricant. An example of the lubricant is as follows:LubricantA. ethylene glycol baseB. waterC. polyethylene oxideD. polysaccharideE. cellulose fibers.
