  • Publication number: 20100261646
Abstract: Biodegradable polymeric microparticle compositions containing one or more active agents, especially those useful for treating or preventing or one or more diseases or disorders of the eye, and methods of making and using thereof, are described. The microsphere compositions release an effective amount of the one or more active agents for a period greater than 14 days in vivo, preferably greater than 60 days in vivo, more preferably up to 73 days in vivo, more preferably greater than 90 days in vivo, even more preferably over 100 days in vivo, and most preferably greater than 107 days in vivo. In a preferred embodiment, the microparticle compositions contain one or more active agents useful for managing elevated intraocular pressure (TOP) in the eye. In one embodiment, the microspheres are formed from polylactide-co-glycolide (“PLGA”); in another embodiment, the microspheres are formed from a blend PLGA and poly lactic acid (“PLA”).

  • Patent number: 7686472
Abstract: A self-defense flashlight includes sharp edges positioned around the head end. A sharp edge protector can be positioned so as to surround and protect the sharp edges, when the flashlight is not being used for self-defense purposes. When needed, the sharp edge protector can be moved so as to expose the sharp edges, allowing the flashlight to be used as a weapon. The protectable sharp edges can also be positioned around the tail end of the self-defense flashlight.

  • Publication number: 20100016209
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of decreasing side effects in a human or animal cancer patient due to radiation therapy or chemotherapy. With this method, methionine enkephalin is administered to the patient at least one time per week for a first time period, where the first time period is at least three weeks. In one embodiment, the first time period is one or two months. Methionine enkephalin is then administered to the patient one time per month for a second time period, where the second time period is at least one month, and where the second time period is consecutive to the first time period. In one embodiment, the total term of methionine enkephalin treatment is at least six months. Methionine enkephalin may be administered to the patient at the same time as, before, or after administration of radiation or chemotherapy.

  • Publication number: 20090154149
Abstract: A rechargeable flashlight uses induction for charging, and thus does not utilize external contacts. The flashlight is cylindrically shaped, and has a secondary coil wrapped around a portion of the cylindrical body. The flashlight is placed within a ring shaped charger with a primary coil, such that the primary coil is wrapped around the secondary coil. This greatly maximizes the amount of interfacing area between the two coils, without adversely affecting the reflector design. This allows for the charging of a high powered flashlight, without requiring the flashlight to have a disadvantageously sized or constructed head. Furthermore, the primary coil of the charger can advantageously serve as a mechanical support for the flashlight.

  • Publication number: 20080286315
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of stimulating dendritic cells, comprising contacting the dendritic cells with methionine enkephalin. The present invention also provides methods of enhancing an immune response to an antigen in a mammal. In a first method, dendritic cells are isolated from the mammal. The dendritic cells are then contacted with methionine enkephalin for a time sufficient to stimulate the cells. Next, the stimulated dendritic cells are contacted with the antigen of interest for a time sufficient for the cells to process the antigen. The dendritic cells are then injected into the mammal. The dendritic cells may be injected into the animal either on their own, or along with methionine enkephalin and/or the antigen. In a second method, the antigen of interest and methionine enkephalin are administered to the mammal. The present invention also provides compositions for administration to a mammalian subject having a tumor.

  • Publication number: 20080007888
Abstract: Micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) variable capacitors and actuation components and related methods are provided. A MEMS variable capacitor can include first and second feed lines extending substantially parallel to one another. Further, MEMS variable capacitors can include first and second capacitive plates being spaced apart from the first and second feed lines. The first and second capacitive plates can be separately movable with respect to at least one of the first and second feed lines for varying the capacitance between the first and second feed lines over a predetermined capacitance range.

  • Publication number: 20070083344
Abstract: A medication management system (MMS) includes a medication management unit (MMU) associated with a medical device. The MMU downloads a medication order to the medical device only if information from a first input matches information from a second input. The medical device receives delivery information only from the MMU. The medication order is performed only after delivery data validation. The MMU also determines drug-drug incompatibility. The MMU can modulate (start, stop, and dynamically adjust) medication order performance. The medical device wirelessly receives a patient ID to automatically associate with the patient. During delivery, the medical device caches an updated drug library to replace an existing one. The medical device displays a patient picture for validation. The MMU evaluates the performance of medical devices and caregivers based medical device feedback. The MMU adjusts the output of medical device information conveyed to a caregiver.

  • Publication number: 20060229557
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for operating a medical device with a screen having an improved graphical user interface, which selectively reallocates screen display for both single and multi-channel pumps. Channel indicators associate operation information with a specific delivery channel. Patient or drug order verification is facilitated with a rendering of the patient or the entire drug order/label on the screen. Decimal numbers are presented in vertically offset decimal format. A dual function button cancels the current operation and, after a delay, clears entered parameters. An area sensitive scrollbar cycles through information at various speeds. Screen brightness is adjusted based on an ambient light detector. A screen saver mode activates based on several operating conditions. The screen is incorporated in a removable user interface.
