  • Patent number: 5802796
Abstract: A building unit including a base unit including a non-curvilinear front face, two side faces, a back face, a top face, and a bottom face. A glaze portion is applied to the front face of the base unit. The glaze portion includes a front face having a curvilinear portion including at least a portion of an inside corner, a back face adjacent the front face of the base unit, two side faces, a top face, and a bottom face.

  • Patent number: 4555375
Abstract: A method of molding a hardened glazed surface on a building block where the block is provided with a slot in the surface to be coated includes inserting a boundary edge member through the slot after the block is placed in a mold containing the coating composition; the boundary edge member conforms closely to the shape of the slot; the molding composition is cured with the boundary edge member in place and the boundary edge member is subsequently removed by forcing the member into the slot, that is away from the surface on which the composition has been molded.

  • Patent number: 4533568
Abstract: A method of preparing a mold surface for forming a pattern on a molded article includes masking the mold surface, sandblasting the exposed surface of the mold, cleaning the mold surface and then depositing a metal layer on the mold surface to provide a metal coated mold surface having areas of altered surface texture corresponding to the pattern. The mold is then used to bond a resin coating to a masonry unit to provide a decorative surface pattern to the exterior molded surface of the resulting composite masonry unit.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 24, 1983
Date of Patent: August 6, 1985
Assignee: The Burns & Russell Company
Inventors: John L. McClinton, Alexander H. Russell
  • Patent number: 4478779
Abstract: A method of coating a surface of an article block includes utilizing a mold that has its interior surface electrolessly coated with a metal such as nickel where the mold is made from mild steel and further includes depositing a resinous composition in the coated metal mold and then inserting a surface of the article and then subsequently curing the composition by exposing the mold to heat; the exterior surface of the mold is oxidized and darkened to increase the capacity for the mold to absorb radiant heat; a method of preparing the mold is provided where the mold is electrolessly coated with the metal while the exterior surface thereof is masked to prevent the deposition of the coating metal on the exterior surface.

  • Patent number: 4296859
Abstract: Pigmented liquid 100% unsaturated polyester of the reactive type is packaged in oriented polystyrene film container inside an external container. The polystyrene container can then be placed in a monomer which dissolves it to release the pigmented polyester.

  • Patent number: 4195010
Abstract: Resinous coatings of an ethylenically-unsaturated polyester are employed to form masonry blocks and tiles which exhibit resistance to fading and loss of color consistency in exterior applications. Ceramic coated quartz granules and sand particles precoated with an unsaturated organofunctional silane provide depth and softness of color and texture which when combined with a polymerizable polyester resin produce decorative fade resistant articles that also exhibit resistance to staining and moisture. The sand, granule and polyester compositions of the invention can also be formed as cast articles without masonry unit backing.

  • Patent number: 4031282
Abstract: Simulated traditional colonial sand-finished masonry is provided having a unique appearance simulating that of sand-finished burned clayware. The decorative qualities are excellent and can be made similar to those of architectural terra cotta and other burned clayware. The product of the invention comprises a substrate or panel which is coated with a cured plastic composition containing filler and having the desired appearance. The coated surface has a rough, rugged surface which is characteristic of sand finished masonry. The surface has the hardness of silica, is waterproof, decorative, and permanent; with the effect of clayware. The simulated product of the invention is easily and inexpensively constructed. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a wall construction is provided of masonry blocks coated with a cured plastic-sand composition having suitable pigments to produce a sand finished masonry appearance.
