    Abstract: A method of producing a MEMS device forms structure on a non-standard device wafer. To that end, the method provides the noted non-standard device wafer, which has a wafer outer diameter and a non-standard thickness. As known by those in the art, a standard device wafer has a standard thickness when its outer diameter equals the wafer outer diameter. In illustrative embodiments, however, the non-standard thickness is smaller than the standard thickness. The method then forms structure on the non-standard device wafer.

    Abstract: A die has a part that is sealed with a cap. The seal can be hermetic or non-hermetic. If hermetic, a layer of glass or metal is formed in the surface of the die, and the cap has a layer of glass or metal at a peripheral area so that, when heated, the layers form a hermetic seal. A non-hermetic seal can be formed by bonding a cap with a patterned adhesive. The cap, which can be silicon or can be a metal paddle, is electrically coupled to a fixed voltage to shield the part of the die.

    Abstract: A low-temperature inorganic dielectric ALD film (e.g., Al2O3 and TiO2) is deposited on a packaged or unpackaged chip device so as to coat the device including any exposed electrical contacts. Such a low-temperature ALD film generally can be deposited without damaging the packaged chip device. The ALD film is typically deposited at a sufficient thickness to provide desired qualities (e.g., hermeticity for the entire packaged chip device, passivation for the electrical contacts, biocompatibility, etc.) but still allow for electrical connections to be made to the electrical contacts (e.g., by soldering or otherwise) directly through the ALD film without having to expose the electrical contacts.

    Abstract: Aluminum or aluminum alloy on each of a pair of semiconductor wafers is thermocompression bonded. Aluminum-based seal rings or electrical interconnects between layers may be thus formed. On a MEMS device, the aluminum-based seal ring surrounds an area occupied by a movably attached microelectromechanical structure. According to a manufacturing method, wafers have an aluminum or aluminum alloy deposited thereon are etched to form an array of aluminum-based rings. The wafers are placed so as to bring the arrays of aluminum-based rings into alignment. Heat and compression bonds the rings. The wafers are singulated to separate out the individual semiconductor devices each with a bonded aluminum-based ring.

    Abstract: A method and a system for measuring the velocity of a projectile. The method and system employ sensors that uses magnetoresistive sensing elements to measure the velocity of a projectile. Two magnetoresistive based sensors may be used to sense a time at which a projectile crosses a sense path associated with each of the sensors. Because the sensors employ magnetoresistive sensing elements, high quality voltage signals are produced, allowing accurate time measurements to be calculated. Accordingly, the velocity of the projectile can be determined by using these time measurements along with a measured spacing distance between the sensors.
