  • Patent number: 7848287
Abstract: The transfer delay QoS attribute for delay-sensitive applications is enforced in radio access networks by determining the ongoing validity of incomplete data packets based on a maximum data transfer delay constraint. According to one embodiment, upper-layer packet data units (PDUs) associated with an application having a maximum data transfer delay constraint are transferred by starting a timer responsive to initial transmission of an RLC data block associated with one or more of the upper-layer PDUs. The timer is initialized to a timer value that is based on the maximum data transfer delay constraint. The RLC data block is retransmitted responsive to a received message indicating reception of the RLC data block is unacknowledged so long as the timer has not expired. The RLC data block is deleted from memory responsive to the timer expiring or a received message indicating reception of the RLC data block is acknowledged.

  • Publication number: 20040136392
Abstract: A re-selection method reduces time needed to switch a packet data session from a first packet data channel in one cell to a second packet data channel in another cell. While the mobile station is engaged in a packet data session on the first packet data channel, it monitors the channel quality of control channels in adjacent cells. During the packet data session, the mobile stations reads at least part of the broadcast information on the adjacent control channels before the re-selection decision is made and identifies potential re-selection candidates. When certain predetermined criteria are met, one or more of the adjacent control channels are identified as potential re-selection candidates and the mobile station switches to a new packet data channel in the selected cell. Because the mobile station has previously read the broadcast information in the selected cell, it can immediately acquire service of the new packet data channel.

  • Patent number: 6701151
Abstract: An method of establishing a radio bearer (RB) resource in an RAN to support communication with a mobile terminal uses a radio bearer resource request message to expedite RB resource allocation. The mobile terminal transmits a packet channel access request message that uniquely identifies the access request type as a RB access request. The requested RB may be a signaling radio bearer (SRB), in which case the RB access request message may identify the specific type of SRB desired. More generally, the RB access request message identifies the access request type as a RB resource request, which is enough to alert the RAN that RB resources are required. The RAN then sends an uplink packet channel assignment and the mobile terminal specifies the RB resource details by transmitting RLC header information on the assigned uplink channel.

  • Publication number: 20030087631
Abstract: An approach to managing a mobile communications device automatically disables the transmitter upon entry into an EM-sensitive environment. A wireless communications system responsible for a geographic area that includes a sensitive EM environment transmits a command message that instructs at least the mobile communications device entering the sensitive area to disable its transmitter. In response to the command message, the mobile communications device disables its transmitter and one of its two receivers or the mobile communications device disables its transmitter, but no receivers. In either case, the mobile communications device may still receive paging messages via the independent second receiver associated with a pager function and/or the primary receiver. The user may either be required to manually re-enable the transmitter, or the transmitter may be automatically re-enabled when the mobile communications device leaves the sensitive EM environment.

  • Patent number: 6252868
Abstract: A communications system in which information is transmitted in successive time slots grouped into a plurality of superframes which are, in turn, grouped into a plurality of hyperframes. A remote station is assigned to one of the time slots in each of the superframes for paging the remote station, each hyperframe including at least two superframes, and the information sent in the assigned time slot in one superframe in each hyperframe is repeated in the assigned time slot in the other superframe(s) in each hyperframe. Each superframe can include a plurality of time slots used for sending paging messages to remote stations, grouped into a plurality of successive paging frames, and the time slot to which the remote station is assigned is included once in every paging frame. Also, each superframe may include time slots comprising a logical channel for broadcast control information and time slots comprising a logical paging channel.

  • Patent number: 5633874
Abstract: A method for obtaining a report from a mobile station on the status of frames comprising an entire message transmitted to the mobile station is disclosed. First, a polling request is sent to the mobile station from a base station. A status report is then sent to the base station. The polling request specifies whether the mobile station should send the status report on a reservation basis (using a reserved frame) or on a contention basis (using an idle frame). The mobile station then transmits a bit map to the communication system to indicate which frames have been correctly received by the mobile station at the point when it received the polling request.
