    Abstract: A disposable calibration device is used to calibrate a spectroscopic measurement system which transmits radiation to a material or tissue in order to effect measurements such as bilirubin measurements. The disposable calibration device includes a structure with a window through which radiation can be transmitted, as well as a removable calibration target arranged on the window and capable of returning a portion of the radiation for calibrating the spectrometer system. The removable calibration target can be peeled of the window to allow a measurement to be made on the material or tissue. Once a measurement is complete, the disposable calibration device can be discarded and a new calibration device can be inserted on the spectroscopic system.

    Abstract: A method of enhancing the permeability of the skin or mucosa to an analyte for diagnostic purposed is described utilizing ultrasound or ultrasound plus a chemical enhancer. If desired the ultrasound may be modulated by means of frequency modulation, amplitude modulation, phase modulation and/or combinations thereof. A frequency modulation from low to high develops a local pressure gradient directed out of the body, thus permitting analytes in the body to traverse the skin and be collected and measured outside the body. The concentration of an analyte in the body is preferably determined by enhancing the permeability of the skin or other biological membrane optionally with a chemical enhancer, applying ultrasound optionally at a modulated frequency, amplitude, phase, or combinations thereof that further induces a local pressure gradient out of the body, collecting the analyte, and utilizing the analyte collection data calculating the concentration of the analyte in the body.

A frequency modulation from high to low develops a local pressure gradient directed into the body, thus permitting permeant to traverse the skin or mucosa. The enhanced delivery is preferably accomplished using a chemical enhancer, applying ultrasound optionally at a modulated frequency, amplitude, phase, or combinations thereof that further induces a local pressure gradient into the body. The method is also useful as a means for application of a tattoo by noninvasively delivering a pigment through the skin surface.

    Abstract: Apparatus and methods for noninvasively diagnosing diabetes mellitus, the prediabetic condition, and cataracts in the human (or other) body are disclosed. Diagnoses are made by illuminating ocular lens tissue with a narrow-band light source at a selected wavelength, detecting the backscattered radiation intensity at the peak of the fluorescent response, and normalizing the detected value with the intensity of its Rayleigh component. Measurements provided in this manner can be used as improved indicators of the presence or absence of certain diseases or conditions.
