  • Publication number: 20150284746
Abstract: This invention relates to the biocatalysts for the efficient production of succinic acid and/or other products from renewable biological feedstocks. The biocatalysts have a very high efficiency for the growth-coupled production of succinic acid and/or other products from carbohydrate feed stocks as a result of both genetic manipulations and metabolic evolution. More specifically, certain biocatalysts of the present invention produce succinic acid at high titers and yield in mineral salts media during simple pH-controlled, batch fermentation without the addition of any exogenous genetic material. The genetic manipulations of the present invention are concerned with the energy-conserving strategies coupled with the elimination of alternative routes for NADH oxidation other than the routes for succinic acid production. The biocatalysts contain glucose-repressed gluconeogenic phosphoenol pyruvate carboxykinase (pck) derepressed by genetic modifications and a genetically-inactivated phosphotransferase system.

  • Publication number: 20150287227
Abstract: This disclosure describes systems, methods, and apparatus for visualizing data. In particular, the present disclosure creates infographics for any complex shape. Thus, a user can provide a logo, symbol, photograph, drawing, etc. and this disclosure provides a way to turn the provided image into an infographic—or chart, where a shape or outline of the image is filled proportionally to data. Importantly, the fill level can vary with changing data and is thus not limited to data points known at a time when the infographic is created. Further, while simple shapes such as circles, donuts, and rectangles are fillable with dynamic data using existing scripts, there are so many additional and more complex shapes in existence that scripts cannot be written to account for all of these shapes. The present disclosure enables dynamic filling of shapes that cannot be filled using existing scripts.

  • Publication number: 20150286349
Abstract: Surfacing of transient user interface (UI) elements is provided. Various UI elements may only be applicable in certain situations or periods of time. To help preserve screen space, particularly on smaller form devices such as tablet computing devices and mobile communication devices where screen space is restricted, a UI element may appear in the UI when the element is relevant. When the element is no longer relevant, it may disappear from view. The appearance and disappearance of the UI element may be an animation. The animation may provide a smooth transition and thus be non-disruptive or distracting to a user.

  • Publication number: 20150285675
Abstract: Various systems and methods for estimating the position of a radiation source in three-dimensional space, together with sensors for use in such systems are described. In some embodiments, the systems include a plurality of radiation sensors. The three-dimensional position of the radiation source is estimated relative to each sensor using an aperture that casts shadows on a radiation detector as a function of the incident angle of the incoming radiation. In some embodiments, the ratio of a reference radiation intensity to a measured radiation intensity is used to estimate direction of the radiation source relative to the sensor. When the angular position of the radiation source is estimated relative to two sensors, the position of the radiation source in three dimensions can be triangulated based on the known relative positions of the two sensors.

  • Publication number: 20150282731
Abstract: An EEG monitor with sensors placed to detect signals and analyze the signals to determine if a frequency below 12 Hz, and more particularly between 3 Hz and 8 Hz, called theta waves, are present. Theta waves are generated when the brain is entering a drowsy or sleep mode. The sensors detect brain wave signals and transmit the signals to a microprocessor which analyzes the signals and determines the brain waves being detected. The brain waves are continuously monitored and the data is continuously transmitted to a microprocessor. If brain waves are detected in the predetermined range of between 3 Hz and 8 Hz the microprocessor activates a stimulus, to wake up the person wearing the device. The stimulus may be visual, auditory or tactile, such as an actuator, a phone call or any other stimulus.

  • Publication number: 20150288459
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed allowing for spatially separated nodes to transmit data to a single remote master receiver node in a synchronized way. Slave nodes can send acoustic data so that it travels through water and arrives at the master node exactly timed so that the data bit appears in a predetermined time slot. The next time slot could be a data bit coming from another remote or slave node in another direction and at a different distance. This can be repeated for many nodes and the incoming bits will be received in a time division multiplexed fashion at the receiver or master node. The senders address and bit meaning are implicit due to the time slot in which they arrive. The assumption is that all nodes have accurate synchronized time as well as the ability to accurately estimate sound travel time between itself and any master node.
