    Abstract: A method (60) of determining core orientation of a core sample (12) cut from the ground by a drill rig (10) having a drill string and a drill bit (20) coupled to a downhole end of the drill string. Drilling data (Cn, Rn) is continuously acquired while the drill rig (10) is operating to cut and retrieve the core sample (12). The drilling data is a combination of core orientation data Cn and rig operational data Rn, where the rig operational data is constituted by either one or both of: (a) near bit rig data Nn; and, (b) at surface rig data Sn. The drilling data is analysed for a specific pattern of rig operational data Rn indicative of the core sample being broken from ground by operation of the drill rig (10). On detection of the specific pattern, the orientation of the core sample prior to being broken from the ground is the acquired core orientation data Cn coinciding with that specific pattern of rig operational data Rn.

Multiple orthogonal or near-orthogonal signals are introduced simultaneously by way of selected different electrodes and resultant predetermined responses (if any) at receiving electrodes are recorded or determined. The signals are encoded using the technique of code division multiplexing and received signals at each receiving electrode are cross-correlated with original signals to determine the contribution of each original signal to a composite received signal. The invention also relates to apparatus suitable for use in applying a method.

    Abstract: A position sensor comprising a primary winding (26) for generating a magnetic flux, a first secondary winding (24.1) the number of turns of which increases in one direction, a second secondary winding (24.2) the number of turns of which increases in the opposite direction to that of the first secondary winding. Both secondary windings (24.1, 24.2) are subjected to the magnetic flux generated by the primary winding (26) whereby voltages are induced in the secondary windings. The sensor further comprises an element movable with respect to the secondary windings. The element is of a magnetic or conductive material and distorts, in its vicinity, the magnetic flux generated by the primary winding (26). By providing third and fourth secondary windings at right angles to the first and secondary windings it is possible to detect position in two dimensions.
