  • Patent number: 10014732
Abstract: A method is provided for optimizing wireless charging of a mobile device by a wireless charger. The method comprises successively reducing transmit power in the wireless charger until an operating wireless transmit power is reached when a power loss occurring during a wireless transmission of power is caused by magnetic saturation, wherein the magnetic saturation occurs in at least one of the mobile device and the wireless charger, wherein the wireless transmission of power is from the wireless charger to the mobile device, and wherein the magnetic saturation is reduced at the operating wireless transmit power, and disabling charging by the wireless charger when the power loss occurring during the wireless transmission of power is caused by a foreign object is present between the mobile device and the wireless charger.

  • Patent number: 9692248
Abstract: A wirelessly powered device and operating method to aid in locating the device in relation to an energy transmitter. A device positioning aid processor places at least one component into a high electrical current consumption mode and determines, based on placing the at least one component into a high electrical current consumption mode, an amount of electrical current induced in a receiving coil that is adapted to inductively couple to a transmission coil external to the wirelessly powered device. An indicator, which is communicatively coupled to the device positioning aid processor, is configured to provide, in response to a determination of the amount of electrical current, an indication corresponding to the amount of electrical current.

  • Patent number: 9406980
Abstract: A method mitigates or even prevents gas swelling of a battery of a portable electronic device at high temperatures and states of charge of the battery. The method comprises: receiving “temperature” and “state of charge” signals, which are functions of a temperature and state of charge of the battery, respectively; determining, as corresponding functions of the “temperature” and “state of charge” signals, whether the temperature is within an elevated operating-temperature range and the state of charge is within an elevated state-of-charge range; cycle-forming the battery a predetermined number of cycles; and terminating the “cycle-forming” operation of the battery when the pre-determined number of cycles is reached.

  • Patent number: 9269994
Abstract: Systems and methods to detect particular levels of remaining battery capacities. A ratio of changes in battery output voltage over changes in battery capacity (?V/?C) is calculated. Detected rises in the value of this ratio are used to detect that a battery has a remaining capacity level that is near depletion. In a certain temperature range, the ?V/?C ratio is used to provide an indication that the battery is approaching a low remaining capacity state. In another temperature range, an increase in the ?V/?C ratio indicates that the battery has reached a mid-range remaining capacity level.

  • Publication number: 20150022194
Abstract: A portable electronic uses a magnetometer to determine an alignment with an inductive charging unit magnetic charging field. The alignment increases a portion of the magnetic charging field generated by the inductive charging unit and received by the portable device to better power the device and reduce battery recharge times. The portable device displays motion icons to facilitate a manual alignment. The magnetometer may also be used for magnetic earthly field applications such as a compass, navigation and augmented reality.

  • Patent number: 8762751
Abstract: An apparatus and method of determining a communications mode. An operating condition of a device is monitored to determine if the operating condition satisfies a condition for loss of charging of a power pack of the device. Examples of operating conditions that satisfy a condition for loss of charging of a power pack of the device include determining that a power pack temperature of the power pack exceeds a power reduction temperature threshold and determining that a net electrical current drawn from the power pack exceeds a net charging electrical current delivered to the power pack. In response to determining that an operating condition of a device satisfies a condition for loss of charging of a power pack of the device, a wireless communications mode of the device is switched from a first mode to a second mode, where the second mode consumes less energy than the first mode.
