  • Patent number: 7438982
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium includes at least a disk substrate, a magnetic recording layer formed with a predetermined concavo-convex pattern on the disk substrate, and a non-magnetic layer formed in concave portions of the concavo-convex pattern. Convex shapes made of a non-magnetic material are formed on the magnetic recording layer or the non-magnetic layer. Each convex shape is formed, for example, into a mountain-like shape whose upper surface width is made smaller than a width of each convex portion of the magnetic recording layer or a width of each concave portion where the non-magnetic layer 6 is formed.

  • Patent number: 7423841
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium capable of preventing contact with a magnetic head for use in recording or reproduction, during recording or reproducing of record data. The magnetic recording medium has a disk-shaped substrate having a surface formed with an annular data-recording area, an outer area outward of the data-recording area, and an inner area inward of the same. The annular data-recording area has a plurality of tracks separated from each other by concentric separating grooves. At least one of the outer area and the inner is subjected to lift-adjusting treatment for enabling adjustment of lifts applied to the magnetic head. This makes it possible to effectively prevent the magnetic head from being inclined to be brought into contact with the magnetic recording medium.

  • Publication number: 20080203053
Abstract: A reliable magnetic recording medium manufacturing method is provided in which a resin material used for processing a recording layer into a concavo-convex pattern can be removed reliably. In the magnetic recording medium manufacturing method, an energy ray curable resin material is spread over a continuous recording layer. Then, a stamper having a predetermined concavo-convex pattern is brought into contact with the resin material to transfer the concavo-convex pattern to the resin material, and the resin material is irradiated with energy rays such that the irradiation energy on a portion excluding the edge portion of the resin material is greater than that on the edge portions. The curing reaction proceeds to a greater extent in the portion excluding the edge portions than in the edge portions. Then, the resin material is etched and removed such that more resin material is removed from the edge portions than from the other portion.

  • Patent number: 7413819
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium is provided, which has a recording layer formed in a concavo-convex pattern and makes it possible to obtain the stable flying characteristics of a head. In the magnetic recording medium, concave portions between recording elements are filled with a non-magnetic material. Thus, the surface of the magnetic recording medium takes a concavo-convex shape which is different from the concavo-convex pattern of the recording layer. Also, the arithmetical mean deviation of the assessed profile of the concavo-convex shape in the surface is restricted to 1 nm or less.

  • Patent number: 7378029
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium is provided, by which a magnetic recording medium having a recording layer formed in a concavo-convex pattern, a sufficiently flat surface, and high recording and reproducing precision is efficiently manufactured. In a non-magnetic material filling step, a non-magnetic material is deposited over a recording layer formed in a predetermined concavo-convex pattern over a substrate to fill concave portions of the concavo-convex pattern with the non-magnetic material. In a flattening step, an excess part of the non-magnetic material above the recording layer is removed by dry etching, to flatten surfaces of the recording layer and the non-magnetic material. Processing conditions are set so as to substantially equalize an etching rate of the non-magnetic material with an etching rate of the recording layer with respect to the dry etching in the flattening step.

  • Patent number: 7370481
Abstract: Liquid nitrogen is filled in a low temperature vessel; an ejector that sucks liquid nitrogen by blowing a cooling agent (liquid or gas) such as low temperature helium gas or liquid helium of pressure higher than in the space within the vessel is disposed in the vessel; the liquid nitrogen blown with the cooling agent is cooled by the cooling agent to become fine particles of solid nitrogen which fall down; and gas in a space of the vessel is discharged out of the vessel so as to maintain the pressure of the space higher than the atmospheric pressure. A gaseous phase of liquid nitrogen in an adiabatic vessel is depressurized to vaporize nitrogen in a liquid phase so that the temperature of the nitrogen reaches the triple point of nitrogen by lowering the temperature to thereby produce solid nitrogen by keeping the temperature at the triple point, and that the produced solid nitrogen is transformed into slush by stirring the content of the adiabatic vessel.

  • Publication number: 20080078739
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium with excellent production efficiency is provided in which the recording layer can be processed into a desired concavo-convex pattern with high precision and the resin layer can reliably and thoroughly be removed. A sub-mask layer having corrosion resistance against an oxygen-containing gas is provided over a main mask layer composed mainly of carbon. Furthermore, an intermediate mask layer is provided between the main mask layer and the sub-mask layer. The intermediate mask layer has corrosion resistance against the oxygen-containing gas, and its etching rate is higher for a halogen-containing gas than for the oxygen-containing gas. The resin layer removing step is conducted between the sub-mask layer processing step and the intermediate mask layer processing step (the main mask layer processing step). The resin layer removing step uses the oxygen-containing gas, and the intermediate mask layer processing step uses the halogen-containing gas.

On this occasion, arithmetical mean deviation of the assessed profile Ra of the surface of each servo pattern region 21 is preferably not lower than 0.3 nm. The difference in surface level between each concave and each convex existing in the surface of the servo pattern region 21 is preferably not larger than 6 nm.
