    Abstract: A backup-source storage system extracts, as a pattern, forwarding target data to a backup-destination storage system among data written to a storage apparatus through a volume. The backup-source storage system determines whether the extracted pattern matches with a registered pattern in the backup-source storage system. When a result of the determination is false, the backup-source storage system registers the extracted pattern and forwards the forwarding target data to the backup-destination storage system. When the result of the determination is true, the backup-source storage system does not forward the forwarding target data.

In the data recovery process for replacing a failure storage drive with a new storage drive, the storage device executes the garbage collection process on a first logical area in the writing hierarchy associated with the first parity group including the failure storage drive. In the garbage collection process, valid data is selected from the first logical area and copied to a second logical area associated with a second parity group different from the first parity group.

    Abstract: This invention prevents valid data written from a healthy host from being lost when restoring data corrupted by a host infected by malware from a backup. In the disclosed storage system, a storage controller records history of data updates to data in volumes made by hosts (host computers) as update history information (an update history management table) with information that can identify the hosts respectively. When having been requested to restore data in a particular volume of the volumes with specifications of a host for which to invalidate data updates and a date and time to do so, based on the update history information, the storage controller invalidates data updates made by the specified host after the specified date and time, whereas keeping data updates valid made by a host different from the specified host after the specified date and time, and restores the particular volume.

    Abstract: In a case of exchanging a migration source storage controller and a migration destination storage controller sharing one storage medium during replacement of storage devices, when hardware configurations or data management forms of the storage controllers are different, data in the storage medium cannot be shared even when data management information can be copied. Accordingly, a storage system, having a storage control unit and a storage drive provided with a storage medium, includes data management information for accessing data in the storage drive. A first storage control unit copies data management information about the data in the storage drive to a second storage control unit. When a write request is received from a host after copying of the data management information begins, each of the first storage and second storage control units stores write data related to the write request in a separate storage area of the storage drive.
