    Abstract: An apparatus for simultaneously reading images on both sides of the document sheet as the sheet having images on both sides is moved through the apparatus, one side read by a CCD sensor and the other side read by a contacted image sensor. An image synthesizing unit synthesizes image data from the CCD sensor and image data from the contacted image within one cycle of main scanning by the two image reading units. Furthermore, image processing circuits in the subsequent steps perform specific modes of processing on the data within one cycle of main scanning. That permits simultaneous reading of both sides of the sheet document without reducing document reading speed and expansion of the image processing unit.

    Abstract: An image information processor has an image superimposing and outputting means for printing out a superimposed image where a bar code representative of a storage location of an electronic document file received through a facsimile is superimposed on the first page of the electronic document file. When a necessary electronic document file is read out, the bar code is read from the printed output corresponding to the necessary electronic document file being set by the user, the storage location of the electronic document file is decrypted from the bar code to thereby identify and read out the electronic document file. In this case, the reading of the bar code is performed only when a permitted password is inputted by the user. The readout of the electronic document file is not performed otherwise.

    Abstract: A digital copier includes an image reading part and a printing part. The image reading part includes reading means for electrically scanning lines of image information of a document in a primary scanning direction at a predetermined cycle to output image signals for the lines; secondary scanning means for mechanically moving a primary scanning position with respect to the document at a constant secondary scanning speed V in a secondary scanning direction perpendicular to the primary scanning direction; and line thinning means for thinning out lines for the image signals to 1/N where N is an integer. The printing part prints an image on a printing medium based on the image signals supplied from the image reading part. The lines of image information of the document are copied at an arbitrary zoom ratio in the secondary scanning direction by combining a value of the integer N and a value of the secondary scanning speed V.

    Abstract: A scanner for reading an original image by hand scanning usually detects scanning positions of the reading sensor on the original image sequentially and stores read image data into image memory according to said scanning positions. However, an area in which the image data is not stored may appear when free scanning is done such that its pixel density exceeds a permitted limit. This area, if it appears, degrades the quality of the image which is reproduced in the image memory. The scanner of the invention detects the area in which the image data has not been stored, and prevents the appearance of such an area in the resulting image. It also judges an abnormal state that is beyond the prevention capacity and informs the operator of such a state. Furthermore, when it detects a scanning error caused by sensor problems, it halts storing the image data and informs the operator of the scanning error.

    Abstract: Picture images being joined without connection gaps can be produced with high quality by adjusting a position error, even if an error is included in a scanning position being detected, and by preventing a map missing area from arising which is caused by the adjustment of position error. A position error detection circuit detects a position error from picture information consisting of image data inside a scanning area being read overlapped by a line image sensor and storage data being stored in an image memory. Next, the position error detection circuit adjusts a scanning position coordinate for cancelling this position error, which is then output to a mapping circuit as an adjustment position coordinate. The mapping circuit stores the image data to the image memory according to the adjustment position coordinate.

One of plural quantization tables is selected for each block based on the discrimination result, and by adaptively quantizing the transformation coefficients using the selected quantization table, text images can be reproduced free of fuzziness, and good expanded images of the dot areas can be obtained with high compression by reducing the high frequency component.
