A restoration section demodulates the voltage difference using a demodulated signal having the same frequency as a frequency of the rectangular wave and synchronized with the rectangular wave, removes harmonic components from the demodulated voltage difference, and restores an electromotive voltage generated in the device under test. In the printing apparatus, it sometimes cannot be determined to which of a clutch lever or the cap of a printhead the carriage abuts against. In this case, even if the carriage abuts against the cap, a position where the abutment was detected is regarded as the temporary home position of the carriage. When a conveyance motor is driven to transfer its driving force to a desired engaging destination, the cap is retracted from the moving path of the carriage. The driving force of the conveyance motor can thereby be transferred to the desired engaging destination.

    Abstract: A method of moving a cap apart from a printhead within a short period of time without damaging a printing apparatus when the cap sticks to the printhead. A cap moving unit is driven to try to move the cap apart from the printhead. When a detection unit for detecting that the cap has moved apart from the printhead detects that the cap has not moved apart from the printhead, it is controlled to slightly reciprocate the carriage while driving the cap moving unit.
