Patent number: 9338023Abstract: In one embodiment, a router gateway in a first Local Area Network (LAN) hosts both an Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) Rapid Deployment (6rd) Customer Edge (CE) as well as a 6rd Border Router (BR). In one specific example embodiment, upon registering the BR to a global computer network, the router gateway may then accept a 6rd tunnel from a device hosting a second 6rd CE of a second LAN, such that the 6rd tunnel joins the first and second LANs into a single LAN. The second CE may then communicate, via the router gateway, between the first and second LANs as a single LAN (e.g., site-to-site), accordingly.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2012Date of Patent: May 10, 2016Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Kendra S. Harrington, Allen J. Huotari

Patent number: 9185155Abstract: In one embodiment, a first interface of a switch interconnects with a broadband modem within a wide area network (WAN), while a second interface of the switch interconnects with a WAN interface of a router, where the router provides a gateway between the WAN and a local area network (LAN). Additionally, a web server is provided at the switch, where the web server is reachable to the WAN on the first interface and to the LAN on the second interface. The switch may then inspect traffic received at the first and second interfaces, and determines, based on inspecting, whether to transparently forward the traffic between the first and second interfaces or to redirect the traffic to the web server.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 2012Date of Patent: November 10, 2015Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Allen J. Huotari, Kendra S. Harrington, Thomas J. Cowling, Stephen Kelly

Patent number: 8665753Abstract: A system and method for causing concurrent setup of a wireless network adapter and a network host device. The method involves receiving a request to install either a wireless network adapter or a network host device. If the request is to install the wireless network adapter, then the method further involves detecting that the network host device is not yet installed, and prompting a user to connect to the network host device. Alternatively, if the request is to install the network host device, then the method further involves detecting that the wireless network adapter is not yet installed, and prompting the user to connect to the wireless network adapter. The method also involves causing a connection to be established between the wireless network adapter and the network host device.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2011Date of Patent: March 4, 2014Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Aaron Hyman Averbuch, William Tuttle, Xin Liu, Mike Mouawad, Kendra S. Publication number: 20130046899Abstract: Techniques are presented for assigning a network address to a computing device. In one embodiment, a network device such as a router may be responsible for assigning a network address (e.g., an IP address) to a connected computing device. For example, in IPv6, the network device provides the computing device with a 64-bit prefix that the computing device then uses to generate a 128-bit unique IP address. The network device typically receives this prefix from another server located in the WAN. In case of a communication failure with the WAN, the network device may be unable to attain the correct prefix. Instead of assigning a random prefix that may cause a conflict if the computing device uses the incorrect prefix on the WAN, the network device may assign a different IP address using a different communication protocol—e.g., IPv4. The computing device can then use IPv4 to access both the LAN and the WAN without risking a conflict.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 16, 2011Publication date: February 21, 2013Inventors: KENDRA S. HARRINGTON, Dan T. Wang

Patent number: 8125915Abstract: A method and system for remotely managing a bridge device, such as a modem, are disclosed. Management traffic from a service provider can be communicated to a bridge device which lacks a public IP address by sending the management traffic through the bridge device to a router of a LAN. The router then sends the management traffic back to the bridge device. Thus, the service provider can perform management tasks such as troubleshooting, health monitoring, accounting, provisioning, security and firmware upgrades in a manner that is transparent to the user.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2005Date of Patent: February 28, 2012Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Manrique Brenes, Matthew B. Patent number: 8099763Abstract: Range-confined security management adapter and method simplify security deployment in a network. First RC security information, including nearest- and k-neighbor information, is transmitted between authenticating neighbor and supplicant neighbor using a predetermined transmission adaptation technique. The adapter can evoke a response from the neighbor by adapting the initial transmitted signal power level, and increasing incrementally; the initial transmitted signal bit rate, and decreasing incrementally; or both, in response to second RC security information signal. RC communications are effected at low power, high bit rate, or both, establishing secure configuration, effecting secure communication, and thwarting miscreant intrusion into the network.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2006Date of Patent: January 17, 2012Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Kendra S. Harrington, Allen J. Huotari, Matthew McRae

Patent number: 7983180Abstract: An advantageous system, apparatus, and method for remotely managing or maintaining a Gateway, such as a residential router, are provided. In one example, the Gateway generates and sends an announcement to a service or equipment provider informing the provider of the Gateway's current IP address (or resolvable name) and a valid password to access the Gateway. Thus, in one example, a service/equipment provider without inherent knowledge of a Gateway IP address may remotely manage or troubleshoot a Gateway using a basic Web browser.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 2005Date of Patent: July 19, 2011Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Kendra S. Harrington, Allen J. Huotari

Publication number: 20110083160Abstract: Client adapter and method simplify security deployment in an EPN, including the shared services electrical power lines of a premises. With direct coupling, piggybacked adapter receives network signals and electrical from EPN-connected first adapter through a shared medium port. An authenticating adapter exchanges security management services and information with supplicant adapter. Two or more adapters may be piggybacked. Piggybacked adapters exchange security management service information without rogue intrusion. Exchanged information, stored, is later used to communicate securely. Defined adjacency (neighborhood) information can be exchanged, and a neighborhood established on an EPN, where one authorized neighbors securely communicate.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 10, 2010Publication date: April 7, 2011Applicant: CISCO TECHNOLOGY, INC.Inventors: MATTHEW MCRAE, ALLEN J. HUOTARI, KENDRA S. HARRINGTON

Patent number: 7908643Abstract: An UNENROLLED adapter responds to an enrollment activation signal by generating an enrollment supplicant signal. The enrollment supplicant signal is received by an ENROLLED adapter, an enrollment provider, which responds by formulating and transmitting an enrollment provider signal, including security management service information, to the UNENROLLED adapter. The UNENROLLED adapter changes a network adapter configuration responsive to the security management service information provided by the ENROLLED adapter, by which the network adapter is configured securely, and secure communications are effectuated. Enrolled adapter can solicit enrollment of an UNENROLLED adapter. The activation signal can be a physical or virtual activation sequence.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2006Date of Patent: March 15, 2011Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Allen J.
