    Abstract: An extrusion die for extruding a chemical functional additive for making a disposable paper product comprises a supply port and a distribution channel in fluid communication with the supply port. The distribution channel terminates with at least one discharge mouth having a passage cross-section therethrough. The discharge mouth comprises an entry orifice having an entry open area Ae, an exit orifice having an exit open area Ax, and a discharge distance defined between the entry orifice and the exit orifice. The exit open area Ax is greater than the entry open area Ae. This ensures that contaminants would pass through the discharge mouth, whereby plugging thereof is substantially avoided. Preferably, the passage cross-section of the discharge mouth continuously and gradually increases from the entry orifice to the exit orifice.

The use of a bonding inhibitor, a cationic starch and a carboxymethyl cellulose results in a creped tissue paper that is both strong and soft. A creped papermaking process comprising the addition of the crepe facilitating composition is also disclosed. The crepe facilitating composition offers the potential to improve production capacity.

    Abstract: A paper structure having both high opacity and improved tensile strength through the incorporation of expanded fiber and an opacifying mineral pigment, such as titanium dioxide, is disclosed. The addition of expanded fiber to the paper structure makes it possible to increase the opacity of the paper through the use of the conventional mineral pigments without adversely affecting the paper's tensile strength. These opacified paper structures are especially useful for producing high quality, strong, light weight printing and writing papers which require material pigments for enhanced opacity.

    Abstract: A process for making mechanically expanded fiber from fibrous material having a fibrillar ultrastructure. The expanded fiber is made by impacting the fibrous material with a plurality of fine media. Impacting by the fine media causes the fibers to expand from a fibrous form to a highly fibrillated form, wherein fibrils separate from, or become substantially disassociated from, the fibrous material ultrastructure. Cellulosic fibrous material is particularly applicable to the process. Cellulosic fibrous material is preferably impacted with fine media at least until the cellulose-containing phase of an aqueous slurry containing 0.5%, by weight, of cellulosic material will retain at least fifty percent of the initial volume of such cellulose-containing phase upon unagitated settling for a period of sixty minutes.

    Abstract: A tufted material is disclosed having a primary tufting substrate made up of layers of molecularly oriented film. The layers are laminated together in a generally undisturbed condition so that at least two layers have directions of molecular orientation that are perpendicular. The layers are molecularly oriented to the point of splitting parallel to the direction of said molecular orientation under the tufting needles, allowing the needles to penetrate easily, securing the tufts in place, and resulting in good tuft registration.
