  • Patent number: 11244703
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to pretreating a magnetic recording head to increase the lifetime of the magnetic media drive. A transparent smear is purposefully formed on the magnetic recording head to ensure the magnetic recording head does not overheat and lead to a short drive lifetime. The transparent smear is formed from material found in the magnetic media. The transparent smear is formed by pretreating the magnetic recording head with the transparent material from the magnetic media. The pretreating occurs without writing any data to the magnetic media. Once the transparent smear is in place, writing may occur. The magnetic recording head can be retreated at a later time should the transparent smear degrade. Furthermore, if an optically absorbing smear develop, it can be removed and a new transparent smear may be formed.

  • Patent number: 10950267
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a magnetic recording medium for a magnetic media drive. Absorbing smears can develop on magnetic recording heads during operation. The absorbing smears lead to shortened drive lifetime. Transparent smears, on the other hand, do not have as deleterious of an impact on drive lifetime as compared to absorbing smears. By doping the medium with a dopant that can lead to development of transparent smears, the formation of absorbing smears can be reduced or even eliminated, which leads to a longer drive lifetime. The dopant can be disposed in the capping layer of the medium or in the absorbing overcoat layer. The dopant will migrate through the medium to the top surface of the medium during operation. From the top surface of the medium, the dopant will deposit on the magnetic head and form a transparent smear.

  • Patent number: 10613113
Abstract: At a time that a position detecting device is initiated, an arithmetic processing unit calculates the absolute position of a rotating shaft at the time of initiation, on the basis of first to third analog signals corresponding to first to third angles of rotation, which are detected respectively by first to third rotational angle detectors. During rotation of the rotating shaft, a current position counter detects a current absolute position of the rotating shaft by counting a number of pulses of forward rotation pulses or reverse rotation pulses, corresponding to the first angle of rotation detected by the first rotational angle detector, taking as a standard a total number of pulses corresponding to the absolute position of the rotating shaft at the time of initiation.

  • Patent number: 9087678
Abstract: A laser-ablation plasma generator generates laser-ablation plasma from a target in a vacuum vessel. An ion beam extractor generates an ion beam by extracting ions included in the laser-ablation plasma from the vacuum vessel. An ion detector detects unintended ions other than intended ions, which are obtained by ionizing the elements in the target, out of ions in the vacuum vessel and outputs a detection signal representing a value which is a number of the unintended ions or a mixing ratio of the unintended ions to the intended ions as a detection result. The ion source using the laser beam makes it possible to normally monitor unintended ions other than intended ions out of ions in the vacuum vessel.
