  • Patent number: 6906146
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for esterifying and/or transesterifying a polymer having a polyethylenic backbone and pendant acid and/or ester moieties comprising contacting a melt of the polymer with a transesterifying compound so that the polymer undergoes esterification and/or transesterification but not alcoholysis. The esterified or transesterified polymer also has pendant ester moieties which differ in kind and/or number from the unreacted polymer. In one embodiment, the process also comprises adding an amount of a transition metal salt that is effective to promote oxygen scavenging. Also in a further embodiment, the process comprises irradiating the transesterified polymer with actinic radiation to reduce the induction period before oxygen scavenging commences. Also disclosed are compositions comprising a component which comprises an ethylenic or polyethylenic backbone and a pendant or terminal moiety comprising a benzylic, allylic, or ether-containing radical.

  • Patent number: 5660761
Abstract: An improved oxygen scavenging system is provided. The system involves an oxygen scavenging phase containing at least one oxygen-scavenger and a second phase comprising at least one catalyst effective in catalyzing a scavenging reaction. The oxygen scavenging phase is substantially devoid of any catalyst of the scavenging reaction and the second phase is effectively separate from the oxygen scavenging phase. Nevertheless, the oxygen scavenging system provides excellent scavenging capabilities while avoiding many of the prior art problems, such as undesired oxidation during high temperature processing when the system is incorporated into a multi-layer film.

  • Patent number: 4187370
Abstract: An alkaline-catalyzed process for preparing poly-2-pyrrolidone characterized by the step of treating the polypyrrolidone reaction product mixture with an acid to prevent polymer agglomeration and prevent base-catalyzed polymer degradation. In another embodiment, unreacted poly-2-pyrrolidone is recovered by washing the acid-treated polymer reaction product mixture with water and the resulting wash water recovered, treated with further acid, and then subjected to a two-stage evaporation process. Poly-2-pyrrolidone is known as nylon 4, and can be shaped into filaments and various molded articles.

  • Patent number: 4139696
Abstract: 2-Pyrrolidone is continuously polymerized to a high-molecular-weight particulate product by the stirred polymerization of the carbonated alkaline polymerizate. The polymerizate is prepared by contacting an aqueous hydroxide with excess 2-pyrrolidone, maintaining the resultant alkaline mixture at an elevated temperature for sufficient time to reduce the 2-pyrrolidone dimer content of the mixture to within the desired limits, dehydrating the alkaline mixture to reduce the water content to within the desired limits, and contacting the alkaline mixture with carbon dioxide to form the carbonated alkaline polymerizate. The paste of particular polypyrrolidone and liquid polymerizate is continuously withdrawn from the reactor, neutralized with aqueous acid and washed with warm water.
