  • Patent number: 6063914
Abstract: The aging of swellable starch maleates is reduced by reacting with one or more singly and/or multiply functional nucleophiles as in a Michael condensation reaction. Mixtures of mercaptoethanol and 1,2-bis-(2-mercaptoethoxy)-ethane or mixtures of sodium bisulfite and pentaerythrite-tetrakis-(2-mercaptoacetate) are preferred. The decrease of the retention capacity [SRV] in the reaction products after 100 days is preferably <10%. The products find use as biodegradable, non-aging superabsorbers.

  • Patent number: 6043293
Abstract: There are provided foamable, foamable polyvinyl halide resin masses containing: A) 1 to 25 parts relative to 100 parts of polyvinyl halide, of a polymerizate obtainable through the emulsion polymerization of i) up to 20 to not more than 75 parts of methylmethacrylate, ii) 25 to 80 parts of one or more C.sub.2 -C.sub.18 alkylmethacrylates, iii) 0 to 5 parts of one or more vinyl unsaturated monomers copolymerizable with (i) and/or (ii, wherein the components (i)-(iii) together yield 100 parts and are polymerized with up to a further 100 parts of usual additives for emulsion polymerization, wherein the emulsion polymerizate is single stepped and has a viscosity number of >700 cm.sup.3 /g and wherein copolymers are excluded which contain iv) MMA per se, or less than 20 or more than 75 parts of MMA together with either v) one or more acrylic acid esters, and/or vi) ethyl methacrylate, n-butyl-methacrylate, or ethylhexyl methacrylate. The resin mass further includes: B) 0.

  • Patent number: 4314137
Abstract: An electrically heated hair curling brush for drying and styling hair includes an elongated handle having a longitudinal axis and provided at its front end with an axially extending inner tube affixed non-rotatably to the handle. An outer tube formed with a multiplicity of radial teeth defining a hair brush is engaged over the inner tube and supported for rotation about the longitudinal axis thereof by cooperating formations on the tube and handle. The cooperating formations include a circumferential rim on the front end of the handle defining a groove receiving and engaging a radially extending circumferential flange on the end of the outer tube adjacent the handle. A locking arrangement, including a radially displaceable spring-biased detent on the handle movable into engagement between radial locking teeth on the flange, is provided for selectively preventing rotation of the outer tube on the inner tube.
