  • Patent number: 8115450
Abstract: A thermally managed enclosure for batteries in a motor vehicle or other machinery includes a cradle of thermally conductive material for containing a battery. The cradle having a bottom wall and side walls closely fitted to and in contact with the battery, to maintain the battery in a stable position. The bottom wall of the cradle has a passageway trough containing a tube for flowing heating or cooling fluid therethrough, to control the optimal operating temperature of the battery. The passageway trough is preferably filled with a thermally conductive fill surrounding said tube. When two or more batteries are required, an array of adjacent cradles are provided in a monocoque tray formed by bonding or welding the multiple cradles at their adjacent sides. These cradles are optionally connected by linearly extending rods in the cradles.

  • Patent number: 7830117
Abstract: A distributed charging system for electric and hybrid electric vehicles includes multiple battery packs of different voltages including high voltage battery packs and one or more low voltage battery packs, each having separate and independent charging systems and multiple sources of electric power. Electric power is distributed from the sources of electric power separately to each of the independent charging systems. A drive system for the electric or hybrid electric vehicle includes a stored energy system made up of these multiple battery packs and a master events controller controlling at least one of a) a traction drive system including a motor and controller for receiving driving electric energy from a stored energy system for propulsion of the vehicle, b), an auxiliary power system for recharging the battery packs and c) a vehicle monitoring and control network for controlling the operation of, and monitoring all bus systems in the vehicle.

  • Publication number: 20090096424
Abstract: A battery charging system uses power line carrier communications, for communicating battery state information associated with charging batteries, between a battery charger and a battery management system (BMS) located on the battery or battery pack. The power line carrier includes transmitters and receivers transmitting and receiving battery state information, such as current, voltage and temperature, as digital signals on existing cable conductors located between the battery/battery pack and the battery charger. The battery management system (BMS), which is physically located on the battery pack, receives the information from the power line carrier, in order to measure a variety of parameters relating to charging the battery, which may be a motor vehicle battery or a battery for operating machinery, such as fork lifts, bulldozers and other earth moving and product transportation vehicles.

  • Patent number: 7323272
Abstract: An air-cooled battery enclosure includes a battery tray frame having a floor section including a plurality of outer slats joined to a lower floor frame. A plurality of corner posts extend upward from the lower floor frame. An array of a plurality of criss-crossed inner slats are joined to the outer slats. Outer side walls join the posts, the outer slats and a set of inner slats in a criss-crossed array of cubbyhole compartments. Each cubby hole compartment contains a battery. A plurality of air spaces are located between respective adjacent walls of the enclosure frame for circulation of cooling gas, such as air. In an alternate embodiment stackable battery trays have outer walls with corrugations to space batteries within the tray from outer walls and an open mesh floor. Criss-crossed internal spring baffles with shallow bends within the trays form spaces for the circulation of cooling gas.
