Patent number: 6810338Abstract: There is provided a monitoring device which can be used as a battery monitor in a mobile communications device, such as a mobile phone. The monitoring device includes output registers, from which parameter values can be read by a processor unit. Advantageously, the device makes frequent measurements, and updates parameter values on the basis of those measurements. The updated stored parameter values can then be read by the processor. This has the advantage that the processor does not have to read a large number of values, in order to obtain the information required about the parameters. This therefore has the result that communications on the bus are reduced, and power consumption is reduced. For example, the parameters may include a maximum battery voltage, a minimum battery voltage, and an average battery voltage, as well as parameters relating to the current supplied to the battery during charging.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 2001Date of Patent: October 26, 2004Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Johan Mercke, Kristoffer Ptasinski, Niclas Håkansson, Bengt Edholm

Patent number: 6750656Abstract: A technique for estimating current consumption of an electronic device such that current consumed during reception of bursts is utilized in calculating the remaining battery power. By determining the time duration of each reception burst and the charge consumed during each burst, the total charge consumed by the reception bursts is calculated. The total charge calculated is used to determine the remaining battery power.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2002Date of Patent: June 15, 2004Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson(PUBL)Inventors: Kent-Inge Ingesson, Johan Hansson, Kristoffer Ptasinski

Patent number: 6677727Abstract: Method and apparatus for synchronizing communication between a battery and an electronic device are disclosed. Bytes consisting of a number of bits are transmitted between the electronic device and the battery. A predetermined bit sequence is appended to at least some of the bytes prior to transmission. The time interval between given shifts in the predetermined bit sequence is used to synchronize the communication.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 2000Date of Patent: January 13, 2004Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Heino Wendelrup, Michael Kellerman, Johan Mercke, Kristoffer Ptasinski, Charles Forsberg, Jonas Bengtsson, Jan Rubbmark

Patent number: 6630814Abstract: Method and apparatus for calibrating a rechargeable battery for mobile telephones and other electronic devices. Calibration is accomplished during a process of completely charging the battery by determining the total amount of charge accepted by the battery during the charging process, and providing a value of total charge capacity of the battery based, at least in part, on the total amount of charge accepted by the battery. The total charge capacity of the battery is used to calculate remaining battery capacity and to predict the remaining operational time of the device. Alternative calibration procedures are provided if the battery is not completely discharged before charging or if the battery is not fully charged by the charging process. The calibration procedures of the invention require no interaction from a user (other than his initiating the normal charging process), and typically permits a calibration to be carried out notwithstanding varying usage habits of different users.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 2001Date of Patent: October 7, 2003Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Kristoffer Ptasinski, Charles Forsberg, Sarandis Kalogeropoulos, Rickard Andersson, Petrus Evers, Anders Langberg, David Demers, Jeremy Carlson, Derek Liddle

Patent number: 6584329Abstract: Digital, serial communication over an interface between an electronic device (102) and a battery (103) attached thereto comprises transmission of bytes (300) consisting of a number of bits. Each bit is defined by one of a high level and a low level, and a leading bit (304) of each byte is of a first one of said high and low levels. The method comprises the step of transmitting the other of the high and low levels for a first period of time (403, 405) immediately prior to said leading bit (304). When the leading bit of a byte is always of the same level (i.e. either high or low) and a period of the opposite level precedes the leading bit, it is very easy and simple to ensure that the sending as well as the receiving party is ready for the communication to take place and adjusted to the actual direction of communication.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 2000Date of Patent: June 24, 2003Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Heino Wendelrup, Michael Kellerman, Johan Mercke, Kristoffer Ptasinski, Jan Rubbmark, Jonas Bengtsson, Charles Forsberg

Patent number: 6363437Abstract: In accordance with embodiments of the invention, an electronic device including one or more controllers and one or more slave units is provided with a bus such as an I2C serial bus that connects the controllers and the slave units. The device further includes a secondary memory containing software drivers for a variety of different types of slave units, which can be present on the bus. The controller determines which types of slave units are actually present on the bus by sending, for each type of slave unit represented by a corresponding software driver in the secondary memory, a command via the bus using an address for the type. After determining which types of slave units are present on the bus, the controller loads corresponding software drivers from the secondary memory into a RAM, and using the loaded software drivers to initialize the slave units present on the bus.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1999Date of Patent: March 26, 2002Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Kristoffer Ptasinski, Jari Sassi

Patent number: 6211644Abstract: Method and system for communication between a battery power receiving device and a battery pack are disclosed. The battery power receiving device has a battery information circuit that is carried with the battery power receiving device as a single unit. Battery information such as battery identification and capacity are stored in the battery power receiving device and the battery information circuit. The battery power receiving device uses the battery information if the battery identification stored therein coincides with the battery identification stored in the battery information circuit.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 2000Date of Patent: April 3, 2001Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM EricssonInventors: Heino Wendelrup, Michael Kellerman, Johan Mercke, Kristoffer Ptasinski, Jan Rubbmark, Jonas Bengtsson, Charles Forsberg

Patent number: 6211647Abstract: A method enables digital, serial communication over an interface between an electronic device (102) and a battery (103) attached thereto. The digital, serial communication comprises transmission of bytes (300) consisting of a number of bits. The method comprises the steps of transmitting a byte from a first one of said electronic device and said battery, receiving said byte in the other of said electronic device and said battery, and retransmitting said received byte unchanged. Hereby, it is possible to compare the contents of the returned byte with the contents of the byte originally transmitted, and thus ensure that the byte was transmitted correctly. This simple procedure makes other error handling procedures such as parity bits unnecessary.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2000Date of Patent: April 3, 2001Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM EricssonInventors: Heino Wendelrup, Michael Kellerman, Johan Mercke, Kristoffer Ptasinski, Jan Rubbmark, Jonas Bengtsson, Charles Forsberg

Patent number: 6194874Abstract: A method and apparatus for maintenance charging a battery is disclosed. A battery is fully charged using conventional CC-CV techniques and subsequently is maintenance charged by applying a first maintenance voltage to the battery for a first predetermined time period. If desired, a second maintenance voltage may be applied to the battery for a second predetermined time period. An apparatus for maintenance charging a battery utilizes a timer and a charge controller to apply a maintenance voltage to a battery for a predetermined time period.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1999Date of Patent: February 27, 2001Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Sarandis Kalogeropoulos, Richard Andersson, Johan Mercke, Charles Forsberg, Magnus Hansson, Heino Wendelrup, Mats Wolf, Kristoffer Ptasinski
