  • Patent number: 7810124
Abstract: A method and apparatus for staggercasting a plurality of content representative signals includes encoding a first and a corresponding second signal representing each of the plurality of content representative signals. A composite signal is generated comprising the plurality of first and second encoded signals. In the composite signal, each respective second encoded signal is delayed with respect to the corresponding first encoded signal. The first and second encoded signal representing a selected one of the content representative signals is extracted to reproduce the selected content representative signal. The extracted first encoded signal is decoded if an error is detected in the extracted second encoded signal, otherwise the extracted second encoded signal is decoded. When a different content representative signal is newly selected, the first extracted encoded signal is decoded until the delayed second extracted encoded signal is available.

  • Patent number: 7765142
Abstract: The present invention provides apparatus and methods for measuring multimedia demand and for maximizing broadcast channel utilization. A first, two way communications channel or channels, from a customer to a broadcaster are provided, as well as a second broadcast channel, which may be, in some embodiments, combined with the two way channel. A bid cycle is established for available programs, whereby one or more programs is listed as available on said two way channel, whereupon one or more customers may bid on those programs in order to view those programs. If the aggregated bids reached a threshold value, the broadcaster will then broadcast the program to the bidding customers, thus closing the bid cycle. If the threshold is not reached, the bid cycle is unsatisfied.

  • Patent number: 7761048
Abstract: A wireless Local Area Network provides data service through a data LAN and also provides video broadcast service through a video LAN. A wireless LAN subscriber accesses the video LAN through one of a plurality of Video Access Points (VAPs) that broadcast multiple video programs on a channel having a frequency different than the frequency over which the subscriber accesses the data LAN. Each VAP maintains the video channel in a one-way broadcast-only mode to prevent a wireless LAN subscriber from seeking to uplink information on that channel. In this way, the wireless LAN can employ a common protocol for both data and video transmission, and deliver the video streams at the maximum permissible downlink transmission rate.

  • Publication number: 20100150249
Abstract: An Advanced Television Systems Committee Digital Television (ATSC DTV) mobile, or handheld, device comprises a receiver for receiving a signal that includes a mobile DTV channel, which is transmitted in StaggerCast form comprising an FEC (Forward Error Correcting) stream and an encoded stream delayed in time from the FEC stream for conveying program content. The receiver decodes the received encoded stream for providing the program content and, if errors are detected in the received encoded stream, uses the received FEC stream to attempt to correct the errors. However, when the uses changes programs, or channels, to a different StaggerCast stream, the receiver decodes a received encoded stream of the different StaggerCast stream for providing the new program content even though for an initial period of time error correction by the receiver is severely limited.

  • Publication number: 20100138730
Abstract: Detection of faults in a transmitted signal stream occurs by recovering, from the information stream, a water mark embedded in the stream prior to transmission. The embedded watermark has data characteristic of stream quality. Thereafter, the at least one watermark property is analyzed to detect faults in the received information stream.

  • Publication number: 20100138314
Abstract: The method for providing micro-billing for internet services includes establishing a micro-billing agent (MBA) within a user's access point (i.e., Internet Service Provider—ISP). The MBA contains the user's billing information and keeps that information exclusive to the MBA. By retaining the user's information with their access point, the user can conduct more secure online transactions, particularly for low cost transactions, without the inconvenience of inputting or transferring personal purchasing information to the online store. According to one aspect, the purchase page may be previously encoded with a micro-billing option which would enable the MBA to obtain user authorizations in online transactions in a more streamlined and secure manner.

  • Patent number: 7675901
Abstract: A method for mapping from an MPEG-2 transport stream to an IP-based RTP/UDP/IP stack for broadcasting service in a WLAN. All the mapping functions may be performed in a receiver transcoder (FIG. 2). Mobile devices such as laptop computers, cell phones and PDAs have limited battery power, CPU processing and memory resources. To reduce CPU processing power and consumption battery power in these devices certain data processing functions are achieved in the communicating systems, such as the de-multiplexer function that typically prepares an MPEG-2 for retransmission at the local level. When a transcoder, capable of de-multiplexing and MPEG-2 transport stream receives a program it de-multiplexes the stream based on PIDs assigned to each transport packet. This de-multiplexing function extracts several components from a transport stream: video and audio PES/ES associated with programs and PSI (PAT and PMTs).

  • Patent number: 7668519
Abstract: A system, apparatus and/or method provides frequency response adjustment of an RF input filter of an RF tuner based on impedance of an antenna system that is providing reception of RF signals to the RF tuner. The frequency response adjustment is preferably accomplished dynamically and/or with respect to each frequency tuned. Particularly, the system, method and/or apparatus provides compensation at the RF tuner level for mistuning effects produced on the RF tuner by antenna system impedance presented at the antenna input that is other than a designed for impedance. Frequency response of an RF input filter for the RF tuner is electronically adjustable with an independent or semi-independent control voltage signal based on one or more measured parameters of a tuning frequency. Frequency response adjustment may include adjustment of a center frequency of the RF input filter bandpass frequency range and/or altering the bandpass frequency range of the RF input filter.

  • Publication number: 20090327842
Abstract: A method and system for transmitting data are described including packetizing the data, performing forward error correction (FEC) encoding on the packetized data in order to generate a parity packet, appending FEC information as padding to the end of payload data of the packetized data and transmitting the packetized data and the at least one parity packet. Also described are a method and system for recovering from loss of a packet including receiving a data packet, receiving a parity packet, buffering the received data packet, detecting packet loss, forward error correction decoding the parity packet to recover from packet loss using forward error correction information extracted from the data packet and from the parity packet and forwarding the recovered packet via an internal socket. Also described is a method for staggercasting.

  • Patent number: 7640565
Abstract: A method for downloading and displaying a video program using a mobile terminal that includes a first radio access network having a first data transfer rate and a second radio access network having a second data transfer rate faster than the first data transfer rate. The downloaded video program is displayed at a predetermined playback rate. Excess portions of the downloaded video program that result when a rate at which the video program is downloaded exceeds the predetermined playback rate are buffered. A third data transfer rate that is lower than the first transfer rate is calculated in response to the predetermined playback rate, the buffered excess portions and the time duration of the remainder of the video program. The third data transfer rate is negotiated with the first network for downloading the video program when the difference between the first and third data transfer rates exceeds a threshold level.

  • Publication number: 20090284662
Abstract: A transport stream for conveying a program for a particular channel includes an auxiliary channel, which conveys multiple lower resolution programs associated with other channels. When a receiver has difficulty receiving a particular channel due to the geographical location of the receiver, the receiver tunes to a stronger signal associated with another channel and recovers a lower resolution version of the desired program from the auxiliary channel conveyed therein.

  • Publication number: 20090276811
Abstract: Data for one, or more, services is encoded using a scalable channel code and divided for transmission over N transmitters such that reception by a receiver of at least M of the transmitted signals, where M<N, enables recovery of the data by the receiver. In other words, even if reception for any one particular transmitted signal in a defined geographical region is not guaranteed, reception of at least M of the other transmitted signals enables reception of the service(s). Thus, one, or more, services can be offered across an entire geographical area notwithstanding the existence of areas of poor, or no, reception.
