  • Patent number: 4813160
Abstract: An athletic shoe adapted to maintain a foot housed therein in a relatively cool and dry state despite heat and moisture developed within the shoe interior in the course of activity. The shoe upper is provided with a metallized coating to reflect incident solar radiation. The shoe includes a ground-engaging outer sole, an inner sole and a contoured compressible inner liner which engages the plantar area of the foot. Interposed between the inner and outer soles is a thin insulating insert acting as a thermal barrier minimizing the conduction of ground heat to the shoe interior. Embedded in the inner sole is an array of tubes each extending along a diagonal axis and terminating at its leading end in an air scoop that projects from the outer side of the inner sole to intercept relatively cool ambient air.

  • Patent number: 4648130
Abstract: A fabric headband which incorporates a replaceable thermal cartridge and is integrated with a miniature radio set whereby when the band is worn about the head as a crown, it then provides beneficial thermal effects as the wearer listens to the radio through a pair of earphones which depend from the crown. The headband is constituted by a central pouch adapted to receive both the cartridge and a flexible card in front thereof having a metallized face, and a pair of hollow fabric wings extending from opposite ends of the pouch. When the band is encircled about the head and the wings are joined to define the crown, the cartridge in the pouch then lies in heat-exchange relationship with the brow of the wearer.

  • Patent number: 4569874
Abstract: Sportswear suitable for a cold environment. Though light-weight and without undue bulk, the garment is adapted to keep the wearer warm, dry and comfortable. It is fabricated of a composite fabric that includes a vapor-permeable laminate formed by a core layer of hollow fibers acting as a thermal blanket sandwiched between inner and outer skins. Both faces of the inner skin and the inside face of the outer skin are metallized to render them reflective, whereas the outside face of the outer skin is blackened to render it absorbent of solar energy. When the garment is worn, radiant heat from the body is returned thereto by the reflective outside face of the inner skin while convection heat from the wearer's body passes by conduction through the inner skin of the laminate to be absorbed by the core layer. At the same time, solar heat absorbed by the blackened face is conducted through the outer skin to be absorbed by the core layer.

  • Patent number: 4523594
Abstract: A stretchable textile heat-exchange jacket which wraps about and conforms to a limb, an arm or other body member and functions therapeutically to heat or cool the member. The jacket is formed by a sheet of elastic fabric material having threaded therein an array of flexible plastic pipes whose respective ends are coupled to an inlet fluid distributor and an outlet fluid collector. The sheet is provided at its opposing sides with complementary fabric fastener components to releasably hold the jacket securely in place on the body member even when the member is flexed. Fluid at a controlled temperature from a pressurized fluid source is fed into the inlet distributor, the fluid from the outlet collector being returned to the source for recirculation through the pipes.

  • Patent number: 4501025
Abstract: An article of sportswear formed by a composite fabric which, when worn by an athlete undergoing strenuous physical activity, functions to regulate the factors giving rise to perspiration and evaporative cooling in a manner conductive to optimum performance. The composite fabric which is foraminated to afford air ventilation is composed of a hydrophobic inner layer in contact with the skin of the wearer and a hydrophilic outer layer exposed to the atmosphere. The inner layer is formed of non-absorbing fibers which act to convey perspiration away from the skin to the second layer, these fibers having a black pigmentation to absorb infrared energy emitted by the wearer. The second layer is formed of absorbent fibers functioning to absorb the perspiration conveyed thereto and to disperse this perspiration throughout the exposed surface thereof to promote evaporative cooling at a controlled rate.

  • Patent number: 4425917
Abstract: A heat exchange system for personal use to provide beneficial cooling or warming effects, depending on the operating mode of the system. Included is a supply of replaceable thermal cartridges, each of which is insertable in a fabric holder having wicking properties, the loaded holder or thermal assembly being adapted to engage and conform to a skin area on the individual that is subject to sweating, such as the brow or neck. Each cartridge is constituted by a sealed flexible envelope formed of plastic film, preferably having a metallic layer thereon acting to reflect radiant energy. The envelope encloses a gel or liquid having a high heat capacity whereby when the supply of cartridges is pre-heated or refrigerated, each cartridge is thereby activated. When an activated cartridge is placed in the holder to engage the skin of an individual, it then functions either as a heat sink or heat source with respect thereto.

  • Patent number: 4341219
Abstract: A support brassiere having an anterior section which is conformable to the breasts and is elastically stretchable in the horizontal direction but not substantially stretchable in the vertical direction connected to a dorsal section and a shoulder support section preferably having the same stretch characteristics. The anterior section is provided with uplifting and separating straps located at the approximate cleavage line and extending downwardly and sidewardly to conform to the underside of the respective breasts and extending downwardly to be secured at the dorsal section.
