  • Patent number: 8407373
Abstract: An Extended Input/output (I/O) measurement word facility is provided. Provision is made for emulation of the Extended I/O measurement word facility. The facility provides for storing measurement data associated with a single I/O operation in an extended measurement word associated with an I/O response block. In a further aspect, the stored data may have a resolution of approximately one-half microsecond.

  • Patent number: 8281315
Abstract: Exemplary embodiments include a system and storage medium for managing computer processing functions in a multi-processor computer environment. The system includes a physical processor, a standard logical processor, an assist logical processor sharing a same logical partition as the standard logical processor, and a single operating system instance associated with the logical partition, the single operating system instance including a switch-to service and a switch-from service. The system also includes a dispatch component managed by the single operating system instance. Upon invoking the switch-to service by standard code, the switch-to service checks to see if an assist logical processor is online and, if so, it updates an integrated assist field of a work element block associated with the task for indicating the task is eligible to be executed on the assist logical processor. The switch-to service also assigns a work queue to the work element block.

  • Publication number: 20120216198
Abstract: Input/output (I/O) operation requests from pageable storage mode guests are interpreted without host intervention. In a pageable mode virtual environment, requests issued by pageable storage mode guests are processed by one or more processors of the environment absent intervention from one or more hosts of the environment. Processing of the requests includes manipulating, by at least one processor on behalf of the guests, buffer state information stored in host storage. The manipulating is performed via instructions initiated by the guests and processed by one or more of the processors.

  • Patent number: 7650469
Abstract: A method is provided for determining whether a logical processor of an information processing system has access to an address space of the information processing system. An instruction is issued by a first processor, the instruction referencing a target logical processor and a target address space. In response to the instruction, first information is checked to determine whether the target logical processor is running. When it is determined that the target logical processor is not running, second information is checked by a host program to determine whether the target logical processor has access to the target address space.

  • Patent number: 7600053
Abstract: An Extended Input/output (I/O) measurement block facility is emulated. The facility provides for the collection of relevant I/O measurement data, and the storing for later efficient retrieval of that data in an extended measurement block. The stored data relates to the performance of an I/O subchannel.

  • Patent number: 7587531
Abstract: An input/output subsystem is configured as a plurality of input/output subsystem images, each of which appears to a program as an independent input/output subsystem. An input/output subsystem image is identified by an input/output subsystem image identifier, which is used by various programs to designate the particular input/output subsystem image for which an I/O operation is to be performed. An input/output subsystem image includes, for instance, one or more input/output paths. An input/output path of an input/output subsystem image is identified by an input/output path identifier, as well as a physical input/output path identifier.

  • Publication number: 20090216963
Abstract: A system, method and computer program product for providing a shared memory translation facility. The method includes receiving a request for access to a memory address from a requestor at a configuration, the receiving at a shared memory translation mechanism. It is determined if the memory address refers to a shared memory object (SMO), the SMO accessible by a plurality of configurations. In response to determining that the memory address refers to the SMO, it is determined if the configuration has access to the SMO. In response to determining that the configuration has access to the SMO, the requestor is provided a system absolute address for the SMO and access to the SMO. In this manner direct interchange of data between the plurality of configurations is allowed.

  • Patent number: 7543095
Abstract: Input/output interruptions are managed in computing environments that do not use dedicated per-guest interruption hardware to present interruptions. Dispatchable guest programs in the environment receive I/O interruptions directly without hypervisor intervention. This is facilitated by using one or more interruption controls stored in memory and associated with each guest program. For those guest programs that are not currently dispatchable, interruptions can be posted for the guests and notifications to the hypervisor can be aggregated. The hypervisor can then process a plurality of notifications for the plurality of guests in a single invocation.

  • Patent number: 7516248
Abstract: I/O measurement data for channels attached to logical control unit queues is obtained related to a plurality of logical control unit queues. A store secondary queue measurement data instruction specifies a range of queues for which extended secondary measurement blocks derived from the I/O measurement data are stored at a memory address specified by the store secondary queue measurement data instruction.
