  • Publication number: 20050169205
Abstract: Transmission techniques are provided that improve service continuity and reduce interruptions in delivery of content that can be caused by transitions that occur when the User Equipment (UE) moves from one cell to the other, or when the delivery of content changes from a Point-to-Point (PTP) connection to a Point-to-Multipoint (PTM) connection in the same serving cell, and vice-versa. Such transmission techniques enable seamless delivery of content across cell borders and/or between different transmission schemes such as Point-to-Multipoint (PTM) and Point-to-Point (PTP). Mechanisms for adjusting different streams and for recovering content from each data block during such transitions are also provided so that data is not lost during a transition. In addition, mechanisms for realigning data during decoding at a receiving terminal are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20050129058
Abstract: Feedback from user stations to the base station for a multicast/broadcast transmission is performed by decoding multicast/broadcast data received from a transmitter on a downlink resource, forming a feedback message corresponding to the reception of the multicast/broadcast data, and queuing the feedback message for transmission to the transmitter on an uplink resource. The uplink resource used corresponds to the downlink resource used for the multicast/broadcast transmission. For unicast transmissions the uplink resource is dedicated to an uplink transmission corresponding to a downlink transmission on the downlink resource.

  • Publication number: 20050089004
Abstract: Method for segmented message transmission wherein each message is first divided into segments and the segments are fragmented. A segment parameter is applied to each segment, and a segment identifier to each fragment. The fragments are provided to a lower level for preparation into frames for transmission. One embodiment is applied to the transmission of short duration messages, such as control messages. A timer is used to detect an erasure within a plurality of transmission frames, wherein the timer uses an average inter-arrival time period between transmitted frames to determine a missing frame. In one embodiment, the time period is given as ?*AIT, wherein a is a constant value, and AIT is the average inter-arrival time of frames.

  • Publication number: 20050008159
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for secure registration for a multicast-broadcast-multimedia system (MBMS) are disclosed. A random number is generated by a broadcast-multicast-service center (BM-SC) and broadcast to user equipment in the coverage area of a radio access network (RAN). A memory module or smart card (UICC) in the user equipment generates a radio access network key (RAK) which is a function of the random number and a key selected from the group consisting of a public land mobile network key (PK) and a broadcast access key (BAK), and then generates a temporary registration key (RGK) as a function of the RAK, a service identification number and a user identification number, for example, P-TMSI, which may be extracted by the RAN to authenticate the registration as legitimate.

  • Patent number: 6839007
Abstract: Techniques for reliable transmission of higher priority data within a frame are disclosed. In one aspect, an inner code is applied to one or more partial segments of a transmitted data frame in addition to any outer code applied to the entire frame. In another aspect, inner coded segments of a received frame are decoded when decoding of the outer code indicates one or more errors within the frame. The inner coded segment is retained when the inner decoding decodes without error. Various other aspects are also disclosed. These aspects have the benefits of reducing the number of retransmissions of higher priority data, as well as reducing delay for time-sensitive segments of the frame. The result is more efficient use of bandwidth, more responsiveness to higher priority segments, such as signaling traffic, and capacity, power, and other efficiencies associated therewith.

A segment parameter is applied to each segment, and a segment identifier to each fragment. The fragments are provided to a lower level for preparation into frames for transmission. One embodiment is applied to the transmission of short duration messages, such as control messages. On receipt of a frame within a segment, a timer is initiated having an expiration period. Receipt of a next frame in the segment stops the timer. Expiration of the expiration period for a timer indicates that a next sequential frame is lost.

  • Patent number: 6788930
Abstract: Method for reducing backlogged calls is disclosed. According to one embodiment, an initial parameter set providing an initial blocking probability and a timestamp is received. A current time index is determined based on the timestamp. Following, a current blocking probability is calculated based on the initial blocking probability and the current time index. The initial parameter set can also provide a delay period, a throughput rate, an expected new call rate and an initial backlog. The initial blocking probability can be determined, for example, from the throughput rate, expected new call rate and initial backlog. An elapsed time between the timestamp and the current system time is determined, and a current time index is determined by dividing the elapsed time by the delay period. A call request is blocked, for example, when a randomly generated number between 0 and 1 is less than the current blocking probability.

  • Publication number: 20040162071
Abstract: A base station (110) in a wireless communications network (100) counts mobile stations (114) receiving broadcast content via multi-user channel. The base station broadcasts (608) a repeating message identifying at least one broadcast content stream and, for each stream, a REGISTER (R) or DO NOT REGISTER (DNR) indicator. Mobile stations periodically re-examine (722) contents of this message. When the indicator is R for a broadcast content stream, mobile stations whose users have elected to receive it send (714) the base station a registration message for that stream. When the number of registered mobile stations reaches (612) a prescribed number, the base station changes (614) the indicator to DNR. When the indicator is DNR for a broadcast content stream, mobile stations refrain (712/716) from sending any registration message for that broadcast content stream. The base station may institute a recount (618) by resetting the indicator to R.

  • Publication number: 20040133841
Abstract: Techniques for puncturing symbols in a communications system. S symbols are received for a frame having a capacity of N symbols, with S being greater than N. P symbols need to be punctured so that remaining symbols fit into the frame. A number of puncture distances, D1 through DN, are computed based on S and P. A particular number of symbol punctures is determined for each computed puncture distance. P1 through PN symbol punctures are then performed at the distances of D1 through DN, respectively. For a more even distribution of the symbol punctures, each of the distances D1 through DN can be selected to be greater than or equal to a minimum puncture distance Dmin defined as D min=└S/P┘, where └ ┘ denotes a floor operator. The symbol punctures at each computed distance can be performed together or distributed with symbol punctures at other distances.

  • Publication number: 20040027999
Abstract: Techniques for transmitting and receiving segmented broadcast messages to improve performance. At a transmitter, a broadcast message to be transmitted over a wireless channel is partitioned into a number of segments and a header is formed for each segment. Each segment header may include (1) a sequence number, (2) a first segment indicator, and/or (3) a last segment indicator. A segmented broadcast message is generated with the segments and their headers, and is transmitted multiple times to improve reliability. At a receiver, one or more message repetitions are received for the segmented broadcast message. Each received message repetition is processed to recover good segments, if any, for the broadcast message. The good segments from the received message repetition(s) are then combined to recover the broadcast message. The processing may terminate whenever all segments of the broadcast message have been recovered.
