Patent number: 5094233Abstract: Recovery from human ethmoidectomy or other pan-sinus surgery wherein the human middle turbinate is subjected to surgical procedure is improved by a post-operative healing technique which comprises inserting over at least a portion of the post-operative middle turbinate a turbinate sheath device. The novel turbinate sheath comprises a septal plate member having an integrally formed turbinate sheathing portion extending along an outer surface of said rear plate portion in a substantially horizontal position, said turbinate sheathing portion having an upper open slot portion adapted to receive and hold the middle turbinate during post-operative healing. The turbinate sheath device is secured by attaching the septal plate member to a nasal portion during healing, whereby the middle turbinate is separated from the septum and lateral nasal wall to prevent adhesion.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1991Date of Patent: March 10, 1992Inventor: Louis G. Patent number: 5022389Abstract: A nasal splint device for retaining a traumatized nose after surgery or injury, and method of applying the nasal splint. A flexible inner splint portion adapted for direct application to nasal skin includes a planar sheet of semi-rigid polymer material having opposing lateral portions and a central bridge portion defined by a pair of substantially parallel outer surface grooves for articulation of the inner splint portion and having elongated cutouts defining a lower dorsal portion of the central bridge portion and lateral portions. A compressible polymeric foam inner layer is attached to the inner sheet material and coextensive with the lateral portions and bridge portion, with a pair of inner foam recesses substantially coextensive with the parallel outer surface grooves. A tacky layer of medical-grade adhesive overlies the inner surface of the foam for direct application to the nasal skin.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 1990Date of Patent: June 11, 1991Assignee: Cornucopia Medical Products, Inc.Inventor: Louis G. Patent number: 4937901Abstract: An apparatus for turning a patient form a supine to a prone position and vice-versa during the course of a surgical procedure is disclosed. In one embodiment, the turning apparatus comprises a rotatable stretcher supported at opposite ends by a rectangular frame. The turning apparatus is adapted to straddle a standard operating table and is provided with telescoping members for adjusting the length and width of the apparatus to accommodate virtually any operating table. The hydraulic system of the operating table is used to raise the turning apparatus, which is then locked in place, either manually or by a self-locking mechanism, in an elevated position. The operating table is then lowered, and the stretcher portion rotated 180.degree., so as to turn the patient over. As a final step, the operating table is again raised to the level of the now rotated stretcher, the legs of the apparatus unlocked, and the patient lowered so that the surgical procedure can continue.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1988Date of Patent: July 3, 1990Inventor: Louis G. Patent number: 4304241Abstract: A skin testing system for in vivo intracutaneous use which comprises a novel injection unit and multiple applicator means, each of the units carrying biological or chemical substances for skin testing, at least one of the units carrying a plurality of different antigens in admixture. Test substances are deposited intracutaneously by piercing the skin with each injection to predetermined depth; and the pierced skin is observed for response to the various substances and dermographia. Each of the injection units includes a handle portion, hilt portion and a scarifier portion having means for carrying testing substances. The preferred applicator means comprises points carrying groups of admixed allergens selected from tree allergens, mold allergens, grass allergens, ragweed allergens, weed allergens, dust, epidermals and foods together with histamine control, and diluent control.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 1980Date of Patent: December 8, 1981Assignee: Aller-Screen, Inc.Inventor: Louis G. Brennan

Patent number: 4222392Abstract: An improved skin test kit comprising base well means and a plurality of injection units held in recessed depressions of the base and removable therefrom is provided with vent means for permitting gas escape during insertion of the injection units. The injection units comprise a hilt portion which may be mated with the periphery of the well depression. A vent hole communicating with a portion of the depression can vent gas through the base bottom, thereby preventing excessive pressure in the well means. The injection unit includes a hollow cannula within a hollow handle with a sharp point extending into liquid test substance in its respective well. Each cannula can be loaded with a predetermined amount of liquid by capillary action and the vent means prevents overloading and provides a controlled amount of liquid to be held in the cannula elements.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1979Date of Patent: September 16, 1980Assignee: Alier-Screen, Inc.Inventor: Louis G.
