    Abstract: In an optical reader for reading alphanumeric and bar code characters, an area array for scanning alphanumeric data and a single photo sensor for scanning bar code data is formed on the same semiconductor chip. Separate processors are connected to the array and to the single photosensor wherein the single photosensor is reading bar codes and the area array is used for reading alphanumeric data.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a portable optical character recognition system which may be used as a point-of-sale or inventory taking system which operates from battery power and may be moved from place to place without difficulty. The system includes an edit and sequencing system which guides the operator in its use, alerting the operator when the proper sequence of input is not used and when an incorrect reading has been made. The system includes visual read out and tape cassette recording of the input to the system to keep a permanent record thereof. A power conserve circuit is incorporated into system to turn the system off in between the reading of lines of data yet retain the proper sequencing when reading is continued.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a control circuit used to conserve power in a portable optical recognition system. When the system is not being used or between actual scans of the reading electronics, power is supplied only to those circuits required to control power to the system and to permit sequence reading of items. An infrared signal is emitted from the reading device and when a document or other item to be read is scanned the infrared signal is reflected back into the scan unit and is detected, thereby sensing that a document is being read and turning the system on.

    Abstract: A page image display system (10) is provided for converting high resolution digitized raster scan data of an image to a lower resolution for display on a cathode ray tube display (38) is provided. The system (10) includes circuitry (26, 28, 32) for extracting a selected group of black/white picture elements from the raster scan data. The selected group of picture elements is applied to a lookup table (34) for converting the black/white picture elements to a single gray level picture element for display on the cathode ray tube display (38).
