  • Patent number: 5393340
Abstract: The invention relates to novel metakaolin pigments which are characterized by a unique combination of exceptionally high brightness and exceptionally low abrasion along with the excellent hiding power equal to that achieved by premium conventional calcined kaolin pigments. The invention relates also to a method of producing such metakaolin pigments by subjecting relatively coarse high purity and high crystallinity kaolin booklets to highly intensive media grinding to generate fine kaolin particles of reduced crystallinity, and calcining the ground particles while limiting calcination temperature and time such as to form metakaolin.
    Type: Grant

    Assignee: Engelhard Corporation
Inventors: Richard A. Slepetys, M. Phillip Jameson
  • Patent number: 5011534
Abstract: A low-abrasion calcined kaolin opacifying pigment composed of particles in the size range of about 70 to 84% by weight finer than 2 microns and having a color defined by Hunter Trisitimulus values of "L" within the range of 92 to 94, "a" within the range of .sup.+ 1.0 to .sup.+ 2.2 and "b" within the range of .sup.+6.4 to .sup.+ 7.5. The pigment is produced by novel wet processing including high solids degritting of a high iron, high titania content Tertiary kaolin without conventional fractionation, bleaching and dewatering to isolate a fine particle size fraction, followed by spray drying, pulverization, calcination and repulverization.

  • Patent number: 4213853
Abstract: A reagent schedule useful for the froth flotation of undeslimed cassiterite ore pulps comprises a metal salt/silicate hydrosol dispersant/depressant and a N-alkyl sulfosuccinamate collector, the sulfosuccinamate preferably being emulsified with a heavy neutral petroleum hydrocarbon oil such as mineral oil. In flotation of cassiterite from an undeslimed ore pulp, the collector is used along with a metal salt/silicate hydrosol dispersant/depressant at a pH in the range of about 4 to 7.

  • Patent number: 4034058
Abstract: Kaolin clay is dehydrated at a temperature in excess of about 600.degree. C. and below 980.degree. C. and the dehydrated clay is chlorinated in a gas-solid reaction at elevated temperature to remove colored iron impurities as volatile chlorides. The dehydrated clay is then cooled and reacted with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, optionally containing additional sources of alumina and silica, to produce high purity hydrated sodium aluminosilicates such as sodium zeolite A in the form of white crystals.
