  • Patent number: 6718180
Abstract: Methods, systems, and arrangements enable balanced base station transmitter output power levels with respect to a receiving mobile station in a macro-diversity communication by adjusting a base station transmitter output power level responsive to power control command(s) sent by the mobile station and the (current) transmitter output power level of the base station. In a fixed adjustment step embodiment, power level convergence is enabled by adjusting the transmitter output power level of a given base station by a greater amount (e.g., than the nominal amount) when a power control command orders a power adjustment of the transmitter output power level towards a reference level and by adjusting the transmitter output power level by a lesser amount when a power control command orders a power adjustment of the is transmitter output power level away from the reference level. A continuous adjustment step embodiment is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6640102
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of performing handover in a mobile radio system. The mobile radio system performs quality measurements on signals transmitted (300) between a mobile terminal and predetermined radio base stations. Handover is performed (301, 302, 303) when some of the measured signal strengths exceeds the signal strength for the radio base station to which the mobile terminal for the moment is set up, added to a handover value. The handover value is dependent on measured signal strengths and neighboring cell relation values. The neighboring cell relation values depend on a probability for handover to be performed from one radio base station to another radio base station in the mobile radio system.

  • Patent number: 6466797
Abstract: In a mobile telecommunication system the transmission quality is dependent on a wide range of radio conditions. A method for extracting a useful estimation of the radio environment of a mobile station in communication in order to predict how the radio conditions will change in the near future for a considered mobile station in the near future. A measurement report is sent from the mobile station to the base station. The quality measure in the measurement report is filtered over the area by a smoothing filter (220), and then processed through an updating filter (230) resulting in a time varying map (240). Several maps are classified (260). Classified data are grouped (270) resulting in the final map, which is stored in a database (280). The final map may be used to enhance the performance of radio network algorithms.

  • Patent number: 6405036
Abstract: A method of compiling transmitter-to-receiver relationships in a radio system is disclosed. The radio system includes at least two receivers (B48, B42) and at least one transmitter (MS1) located in at least one radio coverage area (C42) of the receivers (B42). The method for a single transmitter (MS1) includes the steps of: first, sending a signal (ARM) having known power (Put) on a transmission channel allocated to the transmitter (MS1). Next, in at least one of the receivers (B48, B42), the power received (S48, S42) from the transmitted signal (2, ACCESS) is measured. The transmitted signal is guaranteed to be a solitary signal upon reception. The amplification (g{circumflex over ( )}48, g{circumflex over ( )}42) of the signal (ARM) received in the receiver is then calculated. Finally, the calculated amplification (g{circumflex over ( )}48, g{circumflex over ( )}42) is stored in a storage location in the radio system.

  • Patent number: 6310872
Abstract: The present invention relates to a device and a method for packet switching in a cellular radio communication system. Radio stations that have packets to transmit, transmit packets with a particular transmission probability (Si,n). The fraction of the transmitted packets that are received correctly by the receiving radio station, the so-called throughput fraction (ti,n), can be calculated. The transmission probability (Si,n) for a transmitting radio station is continuously updated according to a mapping function (f(a)) that depends on the value of the throughput fraction (ti,n). According to the invention a mapping function (f(a)), with a derivative with an absolute value less than one, is chosen (201). Starting values of the throughput fraction (ti,n) are generated (203) and these values are input to the mapping function. Updated values of the transmission probability (Si,n) are generated (204) by mapping function.

  • Patent number: 6298081
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for channel hopping between mobile stations (MS1-MS3) and a base station (BS1) in a radio communications system. A channel allocation means (211) within the base station (BS1) generates channel hopping sequences that are transmitted via a control channel (SACCH) to hopping sequence lists (204-206) in the mobile stations (MS1-MS3). The hopping sequences are also transmitted to corresponding hopping sequence lists (201-203) in the base station (BS1). A channel hopping sequence is divided into a number of sequence intervals (Ti) corresponding to the time between two adjacent channel hops within a channel hopping sequence. In the channel allocation means (211) the attenuation (&dgr;) of the connections (F1-F3) and the interference (I(channel,t)) of the channels are continuously being observed within each sequence interval (Ti).

  • Patent number: 6243565
Abstract: A transmitter diversity assembly and an associated method for a radio transmitter. When coupled to a radio transmitter to form a portion thereof, signal diversity is created to overcome multi-path fading. A plurality of antennas are freely selectable to be coupled to receive bursts of a communication signal, modulated to be transmitted on any of selected carriers. By altering the carriers upon which the bursts of the communication signal are transmitted and the spatially-separated antennas used to transduce the bursts of the communication signal, both transmission space diversity and frequency diversity is created. Polarization diversity is further provided by utilization of dual-polarized antennas.

  • Patent number: 6240125
Abstract: A radio communications systems which utilize channel hopping such that those channels which have high channel quality for a given connection are used more often than channels having lower channel quality for the same connection. Channel quality, for instance interference, is measured with respect to uplink connections and with respect to downlink connections. The measured interference values are then stored in an interference list for each of the connections in the radio communications system. The interference lists are converted to corresponding weight lists for each of the connections in both uplink and downlink in the base station. A channel which has a high weight value for a given connection will appear more often in corresponding hopsequence lists than a channel which has a lower weight value.

  • Patent number: 6212384
Abstract: The source cell of a radio signal broadcast within a cellular radio network is determined by several alternative techniques. Each involves either a mobile station or a base station broadcasting a system-unique identity signal from which the network can determine the source of the signal. From the unique source of the signal the network can determine the geographic source from which the signal originated and use that information to perform automatic system administration functions, such as, prepare a best neighbor list or perform frequency planning and allocation for the network.
