  • Patent number: 8305951
Abstract: A system is provided comprising processor, memory, radio transceiver, and an application. The transceiver receives a first message containing a first source media access control address and a first destination address and associated with a first application type and receives a second message containing a second source address and second destination address and associated with the first application type, wherein the first and second destination addresses are associated with first and second members, respectively, of a physical wireless local area network. The application receives the first message, determines that the first message is associated with the first application type, confirms that the first source address is associated with the first application type, and based on the confirmation sends the first message to the first destination. The application receives the second message, determines the second address is not associated with the first application type, and does not forward the second message.

  • Patent number: 8276197
Abstract: A method and system are provided for accessing network resources. An embodiment of the method includes receiving login information associated with logging one or more customers in to a data network associated with a first domain substantially owned by a first entity; and utilizing the login information to automatically register the one or more customers with a second data network associated with a second domain so that at least a portion of services that would have been available to a customer who was properly logged in to the second network will be available to the one or more customers by virtue of the registering.

  • Patent number: 8270956
Abstract: A system and associated methods and media of delivering a notification of an incoming call and a series of interactive options such that a user can provide call-handling instructions to a wireless communications network for the incoming call. The notification and interactive options are transferred to a display device across at least a partially wired network. The indication and caller-identification information is inserted into a video stream that is communicated from the video-providing component to a media-receiving device that is in communication with a display device. The video-providing component receives call-handling instructions from the media-receiving device, as selected by a user, regarding the incoming call and then transmits the call-handling instructions to the wireless communications network.

  • Patent number: 8254379
Abstract: In establishing a data connection with a wireless wide area network, a wireless device may evaluate one or more factors in order to select between IP header compression methods to be used for traffic in the data connection between the wireless device and an access point for the wireless wide area network. For example, the wireless device may select the IP header compression method based on a remaining battery level of the wireless device, a type of application on the wireless device initiating the data connection or another factor. In one embodiment, the selection of the IP header compression method may also be based on an amount of available bandwidth for the access point to allocate to wireless devices.

  • Patent number: 8254305
Abstract: A system is provided comprising a first bridging device associated with a first internet protocol (IP) address having a radio transceiver receiving simple service discovery protocol (SSDP) messages from devices on a first media local area network (LAN), encapsulates and transmits the messages to a second address. The system also comprises a server associated with the second address receiving the messages from the first bridging device. Based on the messages, the server constructs a list of the devices on the first network. Based on a rule, the server forwards at least some of the messages received from the first bridging device to a third address. The system also comprises a second bridging device associated with the third address with a transceiver that receives the messages forwarded to the third address, decapsulates the simple service discovery messages, and wirelessly broadcasts the messages to devices on a second media local area network.

  • Publication number: 20120176972
Abstract: A method and system for establishing wireless IP connectivity, in which a wireless communication device (WCD) obtains a routable IP address during its registration with a radio access network, rather than first registering with the RAN and then subsequently requesting and acquiring packet-data connectivity. Preferably, when the WCD sends a radio access registration request that triggers a registration notification to a home location register (HLR), the HLR or an associated entity will assign an IP address for use by the WCD and will deliver the assigned IP address in a registration notification response message to the RAN. The RAN will then deliver the assigned IP address to the WCD over the air in a radio access registration response message. The WCD may then use the assigned IP address to engage in packet data communications, such as to set up a VoIP session with another IP node, for instance.

  • Patent number: 8213919
Abstract: A system and associated methods deliver Caller ID information directed to a user's mobile phone onto the user's home television set for viewing. One particular method set forth involves selective providing to a video provider information regarding an incoming call destined for and based on the location of a designated mobile phone associated with a particular user, enabling the video provider to insert the information regarding the incoming call into a video stream for delivery to a video display device associated with the particular user. According to the method, a mobile switching center receives a call from a calling phone. Thereafter, a determination is made as to whether designated mobile phone is within a home zone for the particular user. If so, then the calling phone identification and the mobile phone destination number are sent to a video provider associated with the particular user for insertion into the video stream.

  • Patent number: 8213953
Abstract: The load of a coverage area in a wireless wide area network can be used as a basis to determine which vocoder to use in establishing a call between a wireless device in that coverage area and a wireless device in a different coverage area. If the load of the coverage area is above a threshold, then a higher-compression vocoder may be used during the call for communications between the wireless device and an access point serving the wireless device in that coverage area. However, if the load of the coverage area is below the threshold, then a lower-compression vocoder may be used during the call for communications between the wireless device and the access point.

  • Patent number: 8185139
Abstract: A system and associated methods and media are disclosed for delivering to a user of a display device a notification of an incoming message and a series of interactive options such that the user can provide message-handling instructions to a wireless communications network for the incoming message. The notification and interactive options are transferred to a display device across at least a partially wired network. The message can be text-based or voice-based and can be inserted into a video stream that is communicated from the video-providing component to a media-receiving device that is in communication with the display device. The video-providing component receives message-handling instructions from the media-receiving device, as selected by the user, regarding the incoming message and then transmits the message-handling instructions to the wireless communications network.

  • Patent number: 8179884
Abstract: An access point for a wireless wide area network might receive a request from a wireless device to establish a session on the wireless wide area network. In response, the access point might establish a circuit switched uplink channel and a packet switched downlink channel for communications with the wireless device during the session. The access point might communicate with other wireless devices in this manner as well. Additionally, the access point might employ power control methods for the circuit switched uplink channels, and it might employ rate control methods for the packet switched downlink channels.

  • Patent number: 8139585
Abstract: A method and system for providing users with the ability to control the configuration of data session initiated to connect terminals connected to the public-switched telecommunications network (“PSTN”) to services available on data networks. A legacy terminal may initiate a Voice-Over IP connection to a remote terminal by dialing the destination identifier of the remote terminal and a session code. The session code corresponds with one of several session profiles or sets of data session parameters defining characteristics of the data session. A media gateway controller detects the session code and retrieves the corresponding session profile to initiate the data session using the selected session profile.

  • Patent number: 8108569
Abstract: A system and method for transferring data flows, such as streaming video or audio signals, between end devices that are members of the same end device group is provided. A network examining module identifies end devices having an active data flow. A data session populating module populates a data store for an end device group identifying end devices having active data flows. A managing module determines which end devices are compatible for a data flow to be transferred. The data flow transferring module transfers the active data flow from one group member end device to another group member end device.

  • Patent number: 8059663
Abstract: Mobile switching centers (MSCs) in serving systems are interconnected by gateways for tandem free operation. The serving systems route calls involving two mobile stations that use the same compressed digital format through the gateways. The gateways carry the media exchanged during the call in the compressed digital format in order to avoid tandem transcoding. When a serving system hands off a mobile station involved in a tandem free call, the call pathway is extended through the gateways so that the call remains tandem free.

  • Publication number: 20110179184
Abstract: A server is provided. The server comprises a processor, a memory, and an application stored in the memory that, when executed by the processor, receives a progressively uploaded media stream from a remote electronic device. The application also converts the progressively uploaded media stream from a first format to a second format and buffers the converted media stream. The application also transmits the buffered converted media stream to a bridge into a media local area network based on a mapping of the remote electronic device to the media local area network, wherein the mapping is stored in the memory.
