  • Publication number: 20060291419
Abstract: A multi-mode mobile station includes a first interface for wireless communication with a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a second interface for wireless communication with a wireless wide area network (WWAN). The multi-mode mobile station may become engaged in one or more communication sessions via a first wireless network. Session information regarding these one or more communication sessions is stored in a storage system. In response to a handoff request, a control sytem evaluates the session information to determine which of the communication sessions, if any, can be continued via the second wireless network, in accordance with a policy. The user may be notified of any sessions that can not be continued via the second wireless network and/or continued at a reduced level of performance. If the user opts to complete the handoff, continuable sessions are continued via the second wireless network and non-continuable sessions are dropped.

  • Patent number: 7149293
Abstract: A system and method for controlling data session in a wireless network are described. One exemplary method includes detecting a request to establish a data session between a first client device and another device, determining whether the first client device is authorized to establish the data session and, if so, establishing the data session and a control communication. The method further includes using the control communication session to control the data session.

  • Patent number: 7113582
Abstract: A system for managing communications between a first node and a second node in a telecommunication network. Communication normally flows between the first node and the second node via a first communication link in the network. The flow can be re-routed, under a user's control, via a second communication link that may be less expensive or have a lower QoS. A user sends a control signal into the network that indicates the second communication link between the first node and the second node should be used for a subsequent telecommunication connection. In response to the control signal and an address signal that indicates a called station, the system establishes the telecommunication connection between the calling station and the called station via the second communication link.

  • Patent number: 7089011
Abstract: An MSC receives a request from a mobile station to originate a call to a directory number that corresponds to another mobile station. The MSC sends a query that includes the directory number to an off-board translation center (OTC). The OTC determines from the directory number whether the call can be transcoder-free and, if so, provides a response with a transcoder-free indication. If the response includes a transcoder-free indication, the MSC selects a transcoder-free communication path for the call.

  • Patent number: 6980523
Abstract: A method and system for facilitating end-to-end quality of service in a 3G packet data network. A packet-data session is set up between a mobile station and a packet-data network, via a base station and a packet data serving node (PDSN). The base station manages quality of service for the session as it passes over the air interface, and the PDSN manages quality of service for the session as it passes into the packet-data network. The PDSN translates between quality of service on the packet-data network and quality of service on the air interface, and the PDSN and base station communicate the quality of service information, so that both the base station and PDSN can work to set up consistent levels of quality of service on their respective links.

  • Patent number: 6882850
Abstract: A mechanism is disclosed for controlling capacity in a communication system, based on zones in which subscribers are located. When a subscriber seeks to establish a communication session among multiple subscribers, a determination is made as to whether more than a threshold number of the subscribers are located in a common zone. If so, the excess subscribers in that zone are excluded from participating in the session.

  • Patent number: 6865398
Abstract: A method and system for selectively reducing call-setup latency. The method and system provides for selectively increasing the paging frequency used for paging certain mobile stations, so as to decrease the time that it takes to establish radio-link connectivity with those mobile stations. The method and system is particularly useful when establishing real-time communication sessions, such as instant chat sessions, but may be useful in other scenarios as well.

  • Patent number: 6801519
Abstract: A wireless communication system using a media access control (MAC) layer comprising a subscriber unit system and a base station system. The base station system is configured to receive a request for a communication service, dynamically select between a first portion of the MAC layer corresponding to a first wireless transmission link using a licensed radio frequency and a second portion of the MAC layer corresponding to a second wireless transmission link using an unlicensed radio frequency, and exchange communications for the communication service over the selected one of the first portion and the second portion of the MAC layer. The subscriber unit system is configured to transmit the request for the communication service to the base station system and exchange the communications for the communication service over the selected one of the first portion and the second portion of the MAC layer.

  • Publication number: 20030190888
Abstract: A method and system for reducing latency in establishment of a real-time communication session, such as an instant chat session for instance. The method and system provides for buffering an initial real-time media signal until a transmission path exists to send the signal along its way toward a receiving station. Upon establishment of the transmission path, the signal may then be sent along its way. Further, the method and system may provide for selectively increasing the paging frequency used for paging certain mobile stations, so as to decrease the time that it takes to establish radio-link connectivity with those mobile stations.
