  • Publication number: 20250090014
Abstract: Apparatuses, methods, and systems for an ocular hydration sensor/reflectometer system in a near-eye display device are described. In one aspect, a near-eye display device may include a projector to project light onto a user's eye, a photodetector to receive reflections from the tear film of the user's eye (e.g., the tear glints), and a controller to make ocular hydration measurements from the received reflections. The ocular hydration measurements may be used to (1) re-calibrate an eye tracking system of the near-eye display device (by changing parameters such as, e.g., light intensity and/or exposure time); (2) prompt the user to take remedial action; and/or (3) keep track of the user's eye health over time. The projector, photodetector, and/or controller may be integrated into, separate from, or partially integrated/partially separate from the eye tracking system.

Abstract: According to examples, a system for implementing structured polarized illumination techniques to determine and reconstruct a shape and a material property of an object is described. The system may include a light source to transmit an original beam of light; a first grating to diffract the original beam of light into a first light beam and a second light beam, a second grating to emit overlapping light beams towards an object, a polarization camera to capture light reflected from the object, and a computer system, comprising a processor and a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having an executable stored thereon. The processor, when executing the instructions, may cause the system to analyze the light reflected from the object to determine a fringe projection analysis associated with the object, determine a shape of the object; and determine a Mueller matrix to describe material properties of the object.

  • Publication number: 20240355148
Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatuses for eye tracking in a near-eye display device are described. In one aspect, an eye tracking system has an array of Vertical Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) with different groupings of VCSELs within the array providing structured light with different polarization states such that the structured light projected onto the user's eye has (i) a spatially varying and/or temporally-varying intensity profile and/or (ii) a spatially varying and/or temporally-varying polarization profile. In another aspect, an eye tracking system includes a light source, an image sensor, and a controller which controls the image sensor to capture series of images of light reflections from the eye when the eye is stationary, determines blood flow characteristics using pattern changes in the captured series of images, and performs user authentication and/or liveness detection based on the detected blood flow characteristics.

  • Publication number: 20240344823
Abstract: A system for dynamic profilometric imaging using multiscale pattern(s) is described. The system may include a projector that projects a multiscale pattern on an environment including a target of interest. The system may also include an imaging sensor that receives reflections of the projected multiscale pattern from the target of interest. The system may further include a controller of the camera and the projector which performs profilometric imaging of the target of interest by dynamically adjusting an operational parameter of the camera, the projector, and/or the controller. The multiscale pattern(s) may contain useful features at multiple scales and/or may be optimal at predetermined depths and/or resolutions. By dynamically adjusting the operational parameter, such a profilometric imaging system may perform there-dimensional (3D) scene reconstruction while maintaining optimal performance, power efficiency and profilometric resolution.

  • Publication number: 20240337866
Abstract: A gaze direction of a user is determined. An object in the environment associated with the gaze direction is identified. A distance between a device and the object associated with the gaze direction is measured. The device may be a head-mounted device or a contact lens. An optical power of an adaptive optical lens of the device is adjusted in response to the distance between the device and the object in the environment.

  • Publication number: 20240268715
Abstract: According to examples, an apparatus may include a processor and a memory on which is stored machine-readable instructions that when executed by the processor, cause the processor to access a detected polarization state of light reflected from an individual's eye, identify conditions associated with a detection of the polarization state of the light reflected from the individual's eye, determine whether the identified conditions match certain conditions within predefined difference levels, and determine a variance in the detected polarization state of the light from a previously detected polarization state based on a determination that the identified conditions match the certain conditions within the predefined difference levels, in which a change in a glucose level of the individual is to be determined based on the determined variance.

  • Publication number: 20240175676
Abstract: According to examples, a depth sensing apparatus may include an illumination source to output a light beam onto a polarizing beam separation element (PBSE). The PBSE may generate a right hand circularly polarized (RCP) beam and a left hand circularly polarized (LCP) beam to be projected onto a target area, in which the RCP beam and the LCP beam may create an interference with respect to each other. The depth sensing apparatus also includes an imaging component to capture an image of the target area with the RCP beam and the LCP beam projected on the target area, in which the captured image is to be analyzed for depth sensing of the target area. The depth sensing apparatus further includes a polarizer that may increase an intensity of the interference pattern.

  • Publication number: 20240061226
Abstract: Systems and methods for phase-sensitive optical coherence tomography (“OCT”) and/or optical coherence microscopy (“OCM”) include imparting multiple phase shifts to the object beam, the reference beam, or both in an interferometer. Phase shifts can be imparted to the S-polarization and/or P-polarization modes of the object and/or reference beams. As an example, phase shifts can be imparted to the reference beam in the reference arm using a waveplate or other phase shifter. A non-polarizing beamsplitter can provide additional phase shifts to light reflected by the beamsplitter. Full field OCM can be provided by imaging the phase-shifted channels using an image sensor.

  • Publication number: 20220283090
Abstract: A calibration phantom, or related nanoparticle substrate, for multimodal optical system characterization includes a contrast layer and a localizing grid layer. The contrast layer may be a two-dimensional (2D) layer, a stack of 2D layers, a three-dimensional (3D) block, or combinations thereof. Nanoparticles are arranged on, embedded in, or coupled to the contrast layer(s). Nanoparticles provide sub-resolution point-sources that can provide optical contrast for multiple different imaging modalities. The localizing grid layer includes a grid, which may be etched in, or otherwise marked on, the localizing grid layer. By coupling the contrast layer to the localizing grid layer, the positions of the nanoparticles remain fixed relative to the localizing grid, which can be visualized by the imaging system. In this way, a reliable and repeatably imageable calibration phantom is provided.

  • Publication number: 20140071456
Abstract: The invention discloses an optical interferometer which can be used to provide simultaneous measurements over multiple path lengths and methods to employ such an interferometer as to achieve a variety of functions covering simultaneous measurements at different depths separated by an increment of a multiple differential delay in the interferometer as well as simultaneous polarization measurements from a given depth and imaging. Configurations and methods are presented to encode the axial length in an object under investigation using frequency shifting as well as chirping the frequency of signals determining the frequency shifting. Methods are disclosed on the combination of multiple path configurations as to achieve versatile functionality in measurements, by using either broadband excitation or swept source excitation, combined with either discreet frequency shifting or chirped frequency shifting. Under swept source excitation, the invention discloses a long axial range apparatus, with constant sensitivity.
