  • Patent number: 4446289
Abstract: A novel process is disclosed for polymerizing and copolymerizing alpha olefins (ethylene included) also in the presence of conjugated diolephins, and more particularly for copolymerizing ethylene with 1,3-butadiene, based on the use of a plural-component catalyst system, one of said components being a novel complex which contains titanium and magnesium. The process gives, in yields higher than 200,000 grams of polymer per g of elemental Ti, ethylene-butadiene copolymers having a distribution of monomeric units characterized by a particular novel .sup.13 C-NMR spectrum, a high apparent specific gravity and such a grit size as to impart flowability to the dry product, and a distribution in the presence of sulphur and accelerators such as to acquire a gel content (fraction insoluble in boiling xylenes) over 50%.

  • Patent number: 4379074
Abstract: This application relates to a process for the homopolymerization (or copolymerization) of unsaturated compounds, particularly ethylene and higher alpha olefines, to give homopolymers (or copolymers) having a wide molecular weight distribution. The polymerization yields are very high, even at relatively low pressures (10 bars), i.e. such as not to require scrubbing in order to remove the catalytic residue from the polymer. These results are obtained by using, in union with an organometallic aluminium compound, a catalyst in the form of a new titanium trihalide-based chemical composition satisfying the following formula:TiX.sub.3.mM'Y.sub.n.qM"Y'.sub.p.cAlY".sub.3-s R.sub.

  • Patent number: 4297462
Abstract: For the polymerization of ethylene, as such or with one or more alpha-olefines, a novel catalyst composition is suggested, which has a high yield of polymer per weight unit of catalyst. Such compositions are prepared from a titanium compound in which the valency of Ti is 3 or more, said compound being reacted with the vapors of one or more metals of the group consisting of Al, Cr, Mn, V, Ti, Zr, Mo, Zn and Ca in the presence of a halogen donor which is preferably an organic halide, certain inorganic halides being capable of being used provided that the halide metal has at least two degrees of valency. The composition is used in association with an aluminium hydrocarbyl halide. Yields as high as 30,000 grams of polymer per gram of elemental Ti can be obtained.

  • Patent number: 4217245
Abstract: A novel catalyst system for the polymerization or copolymerization of olefines, more particularly to ethylene is disclosed. For preparing the novel catalyst system, a titanium compound (Ti IV) is previously attached to a solid supporting member, whereafter the so anchored Ti is reacted with vapors of a metal, in the presence of a halogenated compound or not. Very high polymer yields are obtained and examples are given.

  • Patent number: 4203866
Abstract: For the polymerization of ethylene, as such or with one or more alpha-olefins, a novel catalyst composition is described, which gives a high yield of polymer per weight unit of catalyst. • Patent number: 4194992
Abstract: A novel catalyst system for the polymerization or copolymerization as the case may be, of alpha-olefines is disclosed, which comprises a cocatalyst which is an aluminum-organic compound and a catalyst proper which is obtained by reacting metal vapors (such as vapors of Mg, Al, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe or their alloys) with Ti or V compounds, a halogen donor and a hydrocarbonaceous inert diluent being possibly present. Another aspect of the invention is the conduct of the polymerization, or copolymerization, run proper. Numerous examples of practical application of the catalyst preparation and use are given and the advantages of the novel approach shown.

  • Patent number: 4105588
Abstract: Process for the purification of olefins by removing oxygen and acetylene from them which comprises passing the olefins over a contact material consisting essentially of a metallic element from the first B group of the period system which element is homogeneously and finely dispersed on a carrier selected from zeolites, spheroidal alumina, silica gel, Kieselghur or colloidal silica stabilized in an aqueous suspension. The purification process is carried out at temperatures of from -50 to 50.degree. C. under pressures of from 0.01 to 60 atmospheres. The contact material is prepared by mixing a suitable compound of the metallic element such as a carbonate or ammonia complex with the selected carrier, thereafter atomizing the mixture to obtain microspheroids, granulating the spheroids into the desired shape and size and finally subjecting the carrier material to a reducing treatment to obtain the metallic element thereon.
