  • Patent number: 11905949
Abstract: A groove is applied to one or more contact surfaces of a journal bearing of a pump to increase a force applied to the contact surface(s). Each groove has an end exposed to discharge pressure of the pump so that the groove communicates the discharge pressure across the contact surface. The groove reduces an area of the contact surface over which fluid leakage results in a pressure differential, thereby increasing a net force applied to the contact surface. Applying the groove to the axial end face of the journal bearing enhances an axial force applied to the journal bearing whereas applying the groove to a radially facing land reduces friction between the journal bearing and the outer housing.

  • Publication number: 20230096852
Abstract: A fuel pump includes a cam arrangement surrounding a rotor and disposed within a spacer ring. The cam arrangement is configured to deterministically translate relative to the spacer ring and the rotor during stroking of the pump. An involute gear set provides an interface between the cam arrangement and the spacer ring. In some cases, the involute gear set is configured to provide a linear translation of the cam arrangement along a timing line. In other cases, the involute gear set is configured to provide a linear translation of the cam arrangement at an angle relative to the timing line.

  • Publication number: 20230065642
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to an electric pump including a housing defining an inlet and an outlet. The electric pump includes a rotor and stator within the housing. The rotor is liquid cooled by working fluid of the pump and the stator is positioned in a dry chamber that is sealed to prevent the working fluid from entering the dry chamber. A heat exchanger is used to cool the stator. An impeller driven by the rotor draws working fluid into the housing through the inlet. The working fluid passes through the heat exchanger to draw heat from the stator before reaching the impeller. The working fluid is discharged from the housing through the outlet by the impeller.

  • Publication number: 20230011740
Abstract: A regenerative pump includes a housing defining a cavity having a fluid inlet arrangement and fluid outlet arrangement, and a channel having an open volume extending between the fluid inlet arrangement and the fluid outlet arrangement. A rotatable shaft extends into the housing. An impeller is mounted to the shaft within the cavity and has a plurality of vanes spaced circumferentially around the axis and opening into the channel. An arm arrangement at least partially defines walls of the channel. The arm arrangement is radially movable to vary the volume of the channel. Enlarging the volume of the channel inhibits regenerative circulatory flow during pumping and limits the pressure generated.

  • Publication number: 20220403848
Abstract: A fuel pump system has a start stage pump and a main stage pump. Fuel is supplied to the start stage pump at lower engine speeds. As the engine speed increases, the fuel system restricts fuel to the start stage pump via a pressure regulating valve and the main stage pump takes over. An electronically controlled shut-off valve limits the amount of fuel supplied to the pressure regulating valve and, hence, the start stage pump when closed to safeguard against operating the start stage pump at unsafe engine speeds.

  • Publication number: 20220381267
Abstract: A hydraulic motor-driven fuel boost pump includes redundant safeguards against overspeeding the impellers. A flow limiter limits the amount of hydraulic fluid that can be supplied to the hydraulic motor, thereby limiting the torque that can be applied to the impellers. A control valve also transitions between a non-restrictive operating state and a restrictive operating state. In the restrictive operating state the control valve regulates the displacement of the swash plate when in the non-restrictive operating state. The control valve does not counter the bias of the swash plate control spring when in the restrictive operating state.

  • Publication number: 20140219826
Abstract: An improved system for providing fuel uses a centrifugal pump arrangement that provides dual pressure. The dual pressure pump assembly includes a centrifugal pump for supplying pressurized fluid to an associated downstream use, and an auxiliary pump stage for selectively boosting pressure of delivered flow. The auxiliary pump stage in one preferred arrangement includes a start and turbo-pump stage where inlet fuel from an associated airframe is fed to a centrifugal pump portion of the turbo-pump that outlets to an inlet of the centrifugal pump. The auxiliary pump stage in another arrangement includes a recirculation passage communicating with the outlet of the high-speed centrifugal pump and the turbine, and the outlets from the start and turbo-pump stage feed an inlet of the high speed centrifugal pump, and a flow valve is disposed in the recirculation passage. In still another arrangement, the auxiliary pump stage includes an electric motor for start-up.
