    Abstract: A lightweight apparatus for performing ultrasonic immersion inspection of a workpiece in an arbitrary orientation that uses significantly less couplant and has a reduced footprint size while providing ultrasonic performance levels comparable to those typically reached using immersion tanks, bubblers, or Dripless Bubblers™ while accommodating large and small ultrasonic beamwidths. The apparatus can be used with manual, automated, or electronic scanning techniques. The apparatus provides a quickly enabled ultrasonic coupling means that minimizes the area of the part wetted, and also can recover spent couplant. As a result, this reduces the number and type of contaminates to which the workpiece is exposed when used when compared to prior art immersion tanks and bubblers.

    Abstract: An external focused ultrasonic beam, non-destructive, open-air, inspection method of sheet metal spot and seam weldments using a probe in combination with motion measurement of the probe over the weldments during inspection without immersion of the material. Reflected ultrasonic waves are received and signals produced and processed or displayed as A-scan, B-scan and C-scan images that are easily recognized. An A-Scan is based on the time-of-flight difference between the outer surface, the weldment and inner and opposite surfaces of the component. B-scan and C-scan indicate the degree of weld fusion and provide data relative to fused thickness and defects sheet metal or welds. A special purpose scanner that enables ultrasonic examination welds. Scanner is pencil like ultrasonic probe with bearing face and position sensing device disposed adjacent a weld position. Scanner collects data for method to determine various characteristics of welded items.

    Abstract: Spot and seam weldments in sheet metal components are inspected by a method in which a focused ultrasonic beam is directed into the weldment from the outside surface together with measuring the motion of the ultrasonic beam over the weldment. Reflected ultrasonic waves are received and signals indicative thereof are produced and processed or displayed as image forms that are easily recognized by an operator. This data is displayed as an A-Scan where a predetermined time window is established on the display, based on the time-of-flight difference between the outer surface, the weld interface or interfaces and the inner or opposite surface of the component. Certain ultrasonic signals are indicative of the degree of complete fusion in the weld zone and provide data relative to the total fused thickness and to defects either in the sheet metal or in the weld.

    Abstract: An ultrasonic image process and system for accurately evaluating the quality of a weld using ultrasonic responses and operator entered data to enhance the quality of weld inspection. Ultrasonic responses useful in accurately indicating the actual location of the weldment, detecting the actual component thickness and the location and characteristic of any other relevant ultrasonic reflectors located in or near the weld heat effected zone are input to a composite image of a weldment for the purpose of enhancing the quality and the ease of detecting, evaluating and sizing of weld defects. Through the superposition of ultrasonic image data from additional complimentary sensors and operator inputs based on prior known data, useful images can be formed to improve the decision making in weldment inspection and evaluation.

    Abstract: An acoustic inspection device having a transducer housing opening to a face of the device to be disposed opposite a workpiece to be inspected. That face of the device having selectively located multi-piece flexible material of a selected length extending outward therefrom disposed to interface with the surface of the workpiece. A first portion of the flexible material is supplied to create, and surround, a region close to the opening of the transducer housing with a plurality of couplant supply ports around the transducer opening to form a chamber into which couplant is continuously supplied to couple the transducer to the surface of the workpiece. A second portion of the flexible material being spaced outward from, and surrounding, the first of the flexible material to create another chamber having vacuum ports in the face of the device opening into that chamber to recover couplant that leaks through the first portion of the flexible material from the couplant chamber.

    Abstract: An inflator for an airbag system has a target mounted in the pressurized gas contained in the inflator. An ultrasonic transducer is mounted on an external surface of the inflator in alignment with the target. The transducer generates and receives reflected ultrasonic signals from the target. The time-of-flight of the signals which are dependent on the gas pressure are used to determine the gas pressure in the inflator. Temperature compensation is provided by fabricating the target of bimetallic material which changes the spacing of the target from the transducer with temperature or providing a temperature sensitive element, e.g. a thermocouple to electrically provide temperature compensation.

    Abstract: A self-contained, portable, hands free, one man ultrasonic test view is disclosed. The system can include a variety of features including a semiautomatic scanner for positioning a probe at various locations within a selected region of a specimen that is powered only in one axis with the second axis being manually advanceable by the user. A second feature is a display that is mountable in front of one eye so that the user of the system can simultaneously view the displayed ultrasonic response signal with one eye while viewing the specimen with the other eye to mentally superimpose the one on the other. Another feature is the inclusion in the processor of a voice recognition device to detect and translate voice commands to select and control the operations of the processor together with a microphone for the user to deliver voice commands to the system.

    Abstract: A method for simulating in real-time the ultrasonic inspection of flaws in power plant components such as piping stores the X, Y and skew data relating to a specific waveform and a specific flaw in a unique format in a multi-disk rotational data storage. The skew angles are respectively stored on one side of a disk with the X-axis data relating to tracks on the disk and the Y-axis data to sectors on the disk. In this manner waveform data of several bytes which represent a defect or flaw can be retrieved and displayed to the user of this simulation system. A RAM is utilized as a cache memory.
