A decrypting algorithm is stored in an area inaccessible by the user outside the external storage device. The external storage device provided with the storage medium retrieves the decrypting algorithm according to which the data is decrypted using a key obtained from outside the external storage device, for example, from a personal computer connected to the external storage device. Since the encrypted data and its decrypting algorithm are stored on the same storage medium, a specific decrypting algorithm can be assigned to each storage medium, thereby improving the security level for the stored information.

The "3D shape data" and "texture data" of a 3D object is stored in a memory in advance. When an operator operates a manipulator, a 2D image is generated, which would be acquired when the 3D object is seen from a viewpoint indicated by the manipulator, by using the 3D shape data and the texture data in every 1/60 sec or less interval (that is, a minimum display interval of the display device). The 2D image is shown on the display, giving the operator a virtual-reality-like feeling as if he was actually holding the 3D object.

The center notifys the user terminal of the deciphering information on condition that a user of the user terminal pays for the software which is supplied to the user terminal in a enciphered form. Then, the user terminal decipheres the enciphered software by using the deciphering information. The refunding system comprises an installation monitoring unit 38a that records whether the software is installed legally and normally. When the user requests the center to refund the paymenet for the software, a refund request unit 38b of the user terminal notifies the center of the installation history along with the refund request. The center determines whether the installation history contains a data indicating that the installing operation of the software is accomplished normally.
