    Abstract: A method of folding is provided for folding an airbag including a vehicle-side wall, a driver-side wall, an inlet opening formed in the vehicle-side wall and a mounting seat disposed in a periphery of the opening. The method includes a first process conducted in a first direction and a second process conducted in a second direction orthogonal to the former. The first process includes an initial folding that folds back each of opposite sides in the first direction of the airbag as flattened with respect to the mounting seat towards the mounting seat, a rolling that rolls the airbag towards the mounting seat from creases formed in the initial folding, and an invaginating that invaginates each of resulting rolled regions between the vehicle-side and driver-side walls. The second process folds up opposite sides in the second direction of the airbag with respect to the mounting seat each towards the mounting seat.

An airbag base member for forming the airbag includes a top-forming panel for forming the top wall, and at least three circumferential panels that extend generally radially from the top-forming panel and form the circumferential wall by being joined together by adjoining edges thereof. Each of the circumferential panels is formed into a generally band-like contour which has a first and a second curving edges that make the circumferential panel enlarge in width from the leading end towards an intermediate portion and then narrow towards the top-forming panel. When the airbag base member is laid flat, adjoining edges of any two adjoining circumferential panels are generally symmetrical to each other in curving shape with respect to a line disposed there between.

The airbag includes a recessed section on left and right sides of and in a vicinity of the center of the occupant-side wall and a tether that connects the bottom of the recessed section to the vehicle-side wall in order to form the recessed section. Opposing walls of the recessed section press each other in a separable fashion when the airbag is inflated. The tether allows gas communication between a central region of the airbag and a peripheral region of the airbag which surrounds the central region, inside the airbag.
