  • Patent number: 8550952
Abstract: A torque modulating coupling device for operatively linking two shafts has a clutch and a piston disposed in a case. The piston selectively applies force to the clutch in response to hydraulic pressure, and a keyed feature adapted to couple with a corresponding keyed feature associated with at least one of the shafts. The coupling device can be formed with two cases that form an enclosure for the clutch and the piston, trapping the piston forces between the cases. This embodiment allows the device to also act as an axle housing cover. In another embodiment, the case is designed to bolt directly to an axle housing cover, trapping piston forces between the case and the cover.

  • Publication number: 20120180596
Abstract: An electronically triggered locking differential includes a differential case, at least one pinion gear and a pair of side gears. A clutch pack is disposed between one of the side gears and the differential case and retards relative rotation between the differential case and the side gear. A cam member is disposed adjacent the clutch pack so that the clutch pack engages when the cam member ramps up. An engagement shaft has one end engaged with the cam member and an opposite end extending through the differential case and engaged with a sprocket. A magnetic coil and flux conductor magnetically couple the sprocket to the differential case when the coil is energized. This coupling retards rotation of the engagement shaft and the cam member relative to the gear case, initiating engagement of the clutch pack to lock the differential.

  • Patent number: 7264569
Abstract: A locking differential having a collar member (35) fixed to rotate with the gear case (11), but free to move axially, and cooperating with a first sidegear (19) to define interdigitated lock members (41,43) operable, when the collar member is locked (FIG. 1), to prevent rotation of the first sidegear relative to the gear case (11). A spring (61) is disposed between the collar member and the gear case, to bias the collar member toward unlocked (FIG. 3). A plurality of actuation members (47) is provided, each having a first end (49) in engagement with the collar member, and a second end (51) in engagement with a ramp plate (53). When the actuating means is in the actuated condition, the ramp plate rotates relative to the gear case, and the actuation members ramp-up on the ramp plate and move the collar member from unlocked to locked.

  • Patent number: 7264568
Abstract: A differential gear mechanism, of either the locking Cr limited slip type, including a gear case rotatably disposed within an outer housing and a mechanism to limit rotation of side gears relative to the gear case; this rotation limiting mechanism including a member which is axially moveable between a first position and a second position. The mechanism includes a sensor assembly and a sensor element disposed adjacent the gear case. The axially moveable member includes a sensed portion surrounding an annular surface of the gear case, and disposed between the annular surface and the sensor element, in one embodiment. Movement of the sensed portion corresponding to changes within the mechanism between unlocked and locked conditions results in the sensor assembly transmitting an electrical output. The vehicle control logic can know the condition of the differential mechanism and control certain other parts or functions of the vehicle accordingly.

  • Publication number: 20040132572
Abstract: A differential gear mechanism, of either the locking or limited slip type, including a gear case (11) rotatably disposed within an outer housing (H) and means (37) to limit rotation of side gears (23,25) relative to the gear case (11), this means (37) including a member (41) which is axially moveable between a first position (FIG. 2) and a second position (FIG. 5). The mechanism includes a sensor assembly (95) and a sensor element (97) disposed adjacent the gear case (11). The axially moveable member (41) includes a sensed portion (89) surrounding an annular outer surface (11S) of the gear case, and disposed between the annular outer surface (11S) and the sensor element (97). Movement of the sensed portion (89) corresponding to changes within the mechanism between, for example, the unlocked and locked conditions, results in the sensor assembly (95) transmitting either a first or second electrical output.
