Patent number: 10088026Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods are provided for the transmission of power in motor vehicles. Power can be transmitted in a smoother and more efficient manner, with smaller and even less mechanical components, by splitting torque into two or more torque paths. A power transmission apparatus comprises a power input shaft, a planetary gear set coupled to the power input shaft, and a variator, such as a continuously variable transmission (CVT), coupled to the gear set. The various components of the planetary gear set and the variator are arranged such that torque is split between two or more torque paths and then recombined before power is output to a gear box and a differential of the motor vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 2017Date of Patent: October 2, 2018Assignee: Dana LimitedInventors: Mark R. J. Versteyhe, Matthias W. J. Byltiauw

Patent number: 10030751Abstract: A variable transmission includes various powerpath layouts consisting in either; a single mode with approximately symmetrical reverse and forward speeds and includes an input shaft, one or two planetary gear sets, or a planetary gear set and a compound gear set when the RTS (ring-to-sun) ratio of the planetary gear set is not physically possible; or a dual mode with each mode being selected by closing a clutch/brake and releasing the other. A first up-speed planetary gear set on the input side of a variator, and a second planetary gear set on the output side of the variator, both configured to split the torque when drivingly engaged with a variator comprising, a first ring assembly, and a second ring assembly. Various up-speed ratio arrangements are shown that tend to increase the speeds and decrease the torque acting on the CVP, allowing a decrease in the variator size.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2014Date of Patent: July 24, 2018Assignee: Dana LimitedInventors: Evrim Taskiran, Benoit Vandevoorde, Matthias W. J. Byltiauw, Mark R. J. Versteyhe, Thibaut E. Duchene

Patent number: 10006529Abstract: A variable transmission includes various powerpath layouts comprising configurations based on a two stage gearbox with a first stage providing a multi-mode configuration combining power-split modes, direct drive modes and a directional stage to select driving either forward or reverse with a pair of direction clutches; or multi-mode operation comprising a planetary gear set as the central part of the configurations together with the CVP, wherein the modes are selected by engaging a clutch/brake while releasing the others. These configurations are particularly useful for compact Off-Highway applications such as compact wheel loaders having a wide speed range and high rimpull force requirement where an operator may also desire limited jerking motion during shifts in the low speed range.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2015Date of Patent: June 26, 2018Assignee: Dana LimitedInventors: Raymond J. Haka, Matthias W. J. Byltiauw

Publication number: 20170152928Abstract: A variable transmission includes a powerpath layout based on multi-mode operation. The various modes are a combination of direct drive or power recirculation. An Infinitely Variable Planetary mode is present, allowing powered neutral feature. In all the modes, the Continuously Variable Planetary is speeded up with a single gear ratio, with the objective of reducing the Continuously Variable Planetary size by running it at high revolutions per minute. This configuration is based on a four mode solution, each mode being selected by closing a clutch/brake and releasing the others. A “common sun” compound planetary is the central part of the configuration together with the Continuously Variable Planetary. The configuration incorporates two forward modes consisting of a powersplit high-speed and direct drive mid-speed, a reverse direct drive mode and a powersplit infinitely variable planetary mode for low positive and reverse speeds as well as a powered neutral mode.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 26, 2015Publication date: June 1, 2017Inventor: Matthias W.
