  • Patent number: 6753842
Abstract: A wireless communication device (100) includes a display (120) having a backlight (124). A backlight controller (126) selectively enables the backlight (124) to minimize power consumption and conserve energy in a battery (132). In one embodiment, a receiver (110) receives a time-of-day message from a remote location to set a timer (122) with the current time-of-day. The current time-of-day is compared with a predetermined time-of-day and the backlight controller (126) enables and disables the backlight (124) at predetermined times-of-day. The wireless communication device (100) may also include a GPS receiver (128), to determine the location of the device. The backlight controller (126) can determine the sunrise or sunset times for the specific location. The GPS data may be used in combination with the time-of-day message. A photosensor (130) can detect ambient light levels and generate an electrical signal corresponding thereto.

  • Publication number: 20030139192
Abstract: A multi-user mobile telephone station, and a method of providing a multi-use mobile telephone station, are disclosed. The multi-user telephone station includes a handset having a key pad, a power-on switch, a display, and a controller coupled to the key pad and the display, a first memory location that stores a first feature set corresponding to a first user of the mobile telephone station, and a second memory location that stores a second feature set corresponding to a second user of the mobile telephone station. Upon powering-on of the handset, a log-in request is presented on the display, and, in response to the log-in request, the controller receives via the keypad a unique code that corresponds to one of at least the first user and the second user. In response to receipt of the unique code, the controller selects one of at least the first feature set or the second feature set and configures the mobile telephone station in accordance with the selected feature set.

  • Patent number: 6542732
Abstract: A data storage area allows a user of a wireless communication device to enter data to be processed and transmitted as a series of dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) tones. A wireless communication device transmits call origination over the traffic channel and can transmit DTMF tones over the traffic channel. The user may enter data into a storage area along with an indication that the entered data should be processed as DTMF tones. Data entered as DTMF tones is processed and transmitted over the traffic channel as a series of DTMF tones. A data storage area may have predetermined locations wherein data stored in the predetermined locations are processed as DTMF tones. Alternatively, a data flag or other indicator may be associated with the data to indicate processing as DTMF tones.

  • Publication number: 20030060189
Abstract: Systems and methods consistent with the present invention provides safe and secure application distribution and execution and controls the risk of providing a test environment associated with the testing of applications. Test enabled permissions are created and distributed to selected application test entities. A management function is used to aid in distributing the test-enabled permissions. The risk is controlled by providing closer scrutiny of the identity of the test entity prior to distributing a test enabled permission to the test entity, providing expiration times associated with the test enabled permissions, and limiting the number of test enabled permissions distributed. The management function tracks the distribution of the test-enabled permissions.

  • Publication number: 20020194325
Abstract: Estimation of user-specific length of time required to download application program over-the-air onto a remote module, such as a wireless device, is calculated based on data transfer rates for data files sent over network to wireless device preceding a requested download of application program. Data transfer rates are calculated while user of wireless device browses application programs for download and/or purchase. Wireless device utilizes data transfer rates and information representing size of selected application program to estimate length of time required to download application program onto the wireless device and displays estimate to user.
