    Abstract: A method of reading data is provided. The method includes receiving an analog signal, converting the analog signal to a one bit wide digital signal at a first sampling frequency, and downsampling the digital signal to provide the one bit wide digital signal at a second sampling frequency. The method further includes conditioning the digital signal prior to providing the digital signal to the detector. The conditioning can be performed after downsampling the digital signal. A data communication channel is also provided. The data communication channel includes an analog to digital converter configured to provide a first one bit wide digital data stream at a first sampling frequency and a signal conditioning member configured to accept the first one bit wide digital data stream at a first sampling frequency and provide a second one bit wide digital data stream at a second sampling frequency.

    Abstract: A servo track sensing system receives equalized servo data from a servo demodulator and corrects for radial incoherence in the servo data. The system has a radial incoherence estimator that receives the equalized servo data and provides a radial incoherence estimate. A sequence detector receives the equalized servo data and the radial incoherence estimate, and provides a sequence detector output. A correlator receives the sequence detector output and provides correlator output data. The correlator output data has a reduced level of errors due to radial incoherence.

    Abstract: In a method for generating a confidence level of a position error signal (PES) component that is indicative of a quality of the PES component, a PES component is generated using position signal samples of a read back signal corresponding to a servo burst pattern. Next, a noise level corresponding to noise in the read back signal is extracted using the position signal samples. A confidence level is then generated based on the PES component and the noise level. A system for performing the method includes a transformation block, a position error signal (PES) component extractor, a noise extractor, and a confidence level generator. The transformation block is configured to receive position signal samples of a read back signal corresponding to a servo burst pattern taken at a sampling frequency. A transformed domain representation of the position signal samples is then generated by the transformation block based on the sampling frequency and the servo burst pattern.

    Abstract: A method of preprocessing low frequency components of a perpendicular read-back signal in a data storage system in order to reduce low frequency noise includes introducing a dominant known perturbation, to the perpendicular read-back signal, which masks the effects of other low frequency noise sources and leaves the read-back signal with one dominant low frequency noise component. The method then further includes removing the dominant known perturbation from the read-back signal to recover low frequency portions of the read-back signal in order to determine values of bits read from a storage medium. A perpendicular recording data storage system configured to implement the method is also disclosed.
