In order to be able to paint different colored backgrounds in a covering fashion using the transparent interference pigments, the interference pigments are built up in several layers and also have at least one and preferably two interfering layer(s) of liquid crystal polymers and even of a single, preferably centrally located, light-absorbent layer, with the light-absorbent layer absorbing at least a portion of the visible light spectrum. Advantageously the light-absorbent layer can absorb light in the entire visible light spectrum, in other words appear black.

    Abstract: A process for preparing a phosphor layer of a cathode ray tube. To prepare a phosphor layer located on the display screen rear side of the cathode ray tube, the display screen rear side is first coated with an electrically conductive electrode layer consisting of electrically conductive polymers; a solution containing the phosphors or their precursors as well as a solution containing an electrolyte are deposited on the electrode layer; an electric field is applied between the electrode layer and the solution; and the phosphors are electrophoretically deposited on the electrode layer to form the phosphor layer. Since polymers with an evaporation temperature below the destruction temperature of the phosphors are selected, the electrode layer can subsequently be removed by evaporating the polymers.

    Abstract: The present invention discloses coated objects, such as car bodies, as well as coatings for coating such objects. In order to achieve new, hitherto unknown color effects with said coatings, at least some, and preferably only platelet-like interference pigments are mixed into the coating. When the coating is applied, the interference pigments automatically align themselves in a direction approximately parallel to the object surface. These interference pigments are made of liquid crystalline side chain polymers with a nematic and a chiral component, in which the side group mesogens are at least approximately nematic, smectic and/or cholesteric. Particularly intensive tones having a hitherto unknown brilliance may thus be obtained on a coated object, or a shimmering effect depending on the angle of incidence of light and viewing direction.

    Abstract: A coating material and coating process for color coating articles, such as motor vehicle bodies, and coated articles produced therewith. The coating contains a paint vehicle composed of at least one curable liquid-crystal polymer (LCP), the colored appearance of the coating being determined by mesogens of the paint vehicle which exhibit an interference effect, the mesogens automatically aligning themselves substantially perpendicular to the surface of the article during application of the coating material and adopting a chiral-nematic configuration in which they form a helix having a pitch length which can be influenced by heat within a specified temperature range. The liquid-crystal polymers are such that they are not crosslinked by heat and also such that the temperature level at which the pitch length of the helix can be influenced is above the temperature at which the color coated article is used.
