Patents by Inventor Michael Giesing

Michael Giesing has filed for patents to protect the following inventions. This listing includes patent applications that are pending as well as patents that have already been granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

  • Patent number: 7993826
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for investigating body fluids for cancer cells, the use thereof and corresponding analysis kits, and the possibilities for cancer treatment derived therefrom. The method is based essentially on determining the expression of the manganese superoxide dismutase, thioredoxin reductase and/or glutathione peroxidase genes. Use of this method permits in particular reliable tumor diagnosis and prognosis. Diminishing an elevated expression of these genes has therapeutic value and may be utilized for cancer treatment.

  • Patent number: 7232653
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for isolating cancer cells from body fluids containing cells. The invention also relates to sets for carrying out said method, cancer cells isolated from body fluids, cell lines established therefrom or derived cell constituents, the use thereof as therapeutic agents or targets, and pharmaceutical or veterinary products containing them. The inventive method is based on the idea that body fluids containing cells are comprised of different sized and different shaped cells and groups of cells. According to the invention, body fluids containing cells or fractions of said body fluids are filtered in a sieve that retains cancer cells. The isolation and characterization of cancer cells is highly important, especially in the field of oncology, in order to respond to questions related to diagnostics, prognoses, therapeutics and scientific matters in human medicine and veterinary medicine.

  • Patent number: 7056660
Abstract: The invention relates to a diagnostic method and related compositions for characterizing disseminated and micrometastasized cancer cells in body fluids using DNA, mRNA and/or protein. According to the method, DNAs, mRNAs and/or proteins of cancerous and non-cancerous cells obtained from a body fluid (i.e., cell preparations that are not enriched for cancer cells) and DNAs, mRNAs and/or proteins of cancerous cells that are removed from the body fluid (i.e., cell preparations that are enriched for cancer cells) are analyzed, to determine the presence or expression in body fluid cells of at least one cancer-specific gene that is not expressed in non-cancer cells or of at least one cancer-associated gene, and of at least one cancer-specific or cancer-associated gene in cancer cells removed from the body fluid cells (i.e., in isolated cancer cells).
