  • Patent number: 6325593
Abstract: A gas turbine engine hollow turbine airfoil, such as a first stage vane of a high pressure turbine of a gas turbine engine includes an outer wall surrounding a hollow interior. The outer wall extends radially outwardly in a spanwise direction from an airfoil base to an airfoil tip and has chordwise spaced apart leading and trailing edges and widthwise spaced apart pressure and suction side portions extending chordwise between the leading edge and a trailing edge block which terminates at the trailing edge. A plurality of trailing edge cooling air ducts extend chordwise through the trailing edge block aftwardly from the hollow interior and a plurality of trailing edge film cooling holes extend from the ducts through the trailing edge block. The cooling air ducts are preferably centered near a neutral axis of chordwise and spanwise bending of the trailing edge block.

  • Patent number: 5931636
Abstract: A variable area turbine nozzle includes a plurality of circumferentially adjoining nozzle segments. Each nozzle segment includes outer and inner bands, with a plurality of first vane segments fixedly joined therebetween. A plurality of second vane segments adjoin respective ones of the first vane segments to define therewith corresponding vanes which are spaced apart to define respective throats of minimum flow area for channeling therethrough combustion gas. The second vane segments are pivotable to selectively vary the throat area.

  • Patent number: 5281097
Abstract: Sheet Metal thermal control dampers are disposed in the cavities between turbine blades to bear against the undersides of opposed blade platforms portions of angularly adjacent blades under centrifugal loading to dampen blade vibrations and to seal the gaps between platforms against the radial flow of working fluid into the interblade cavities. The dampers are configured to cooperate with forward and aft seals to also block the axial flow of working fluid through the interblade cavities. Holes are provided in the dampers through which cooling air introduced into the interblade cavities can flow into contact with the platform undersides and cool the platforms, thereby controlling temperature rise in the blade attachment structure.

  • Patent number: 5134844
Abstract: An aft entry system in a gas turbine engine is provided for cooling selected one or more of aft high and low pressure turbine stages of the engine. The aft entry system includes an air flow circuit for routing low pressure cooling air radially outward from an interstage region of a multi-stage compressor of a core engine of the gas turbine engine and axially in an aft direction to a plurality of radial passages, such as provided by stationary stator and outlet guide vanes, which provide an aft entry region to the selected high and low pressure turbine stages. The pressure of the cooling air routed by the air flow circuit of the aft entry system can be lower than the pressure of air at a discharge end of the compressor but higher than the pressure of the gas stream discharging from the selected turbine stage.
